Airbags and kids
This is only my second post, and I have to ask this question. I have just purchased a used 1999 FRC, and I have four kids (3 boys 15, 10, 6 and one girl 15 mos) I would like to have the kids go for a ride in the vette with my wife or I (its really our escape pod from the house). However due to the air bag, I wont let the three littlest ride yet. How do I go about disabling the air bag, how do I ask my dealer? is it reversable? would a modification be looked "down" upon, however useful or safe it may be. You should have been there to hear my 15 year old giggle on his first ride! Hes hooked, no doubt. He thinks my 68 RS 350 is up for grabs now that I have the vette, wrong.........

The newer models do have an airbag defeat switch, but that didn't come in until the 200 or 2001 model year. I would think it could be retrofited, but I don't know for sure. There are provisions that allow a dealer to install an airbag defeat switch, and with small kids in a two seat car you may qualify. Someone more knowledgeable about this can tell you for sure. The dealer should know (emphasis on 'should').

The kit can be purchased from a forum vendor: Ken Fitchner. Then you can use this website to understand how to do the mod. Many have completed it, and if you use the search engine on this forum, search on airbag under C5 Technical, and archived posts.
