I have the Hurst shifter on my Z...
It really seems to be notchy between gears. That is when I go to shift, it clicks to neutral, then clicks to the gear. I am realizing its really a slow shift when it does this.
I have found that when I am not moving.. SOMETIMES it clicks very smooth to the next gear and I am pretty sure it should be doing that all the time. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
Do you run your car hard at the track? I did and I had the same problem. Turns out my clutch was on its way out. I got a cartek clutch now and the hurst is like butter.
... Make sure you left the stops out, then give it two to three hundred mile to break in.
I have tried them all and the Hurst is my favorite due to quick short throw shifting like the ripper with less muscle to get the job done.
I just did mine yesterday, so I can't really help you much. I do like it more than stock. It's just going to take me some time to get used to it.
i have about 300 mi on my hurst shifter. it is much better that the original shifter, yes it is a little notchy but it is improving and becoming smoother.
all comment that a saw previously on the forum said give it a little time.

Re: Notchy Hurst Anyone? (Mr. Jones)
Mine was notchy....hated it, so I took it out. And there is nothing to "break in". It's more likely that people get used to it over time, so it doesn't seem stiff. :steering:
Hurst shifters have been notchy from the start. I had one on my '65 Muncie and it was notchy. The difference is they are accurate. The factory shifter is very sloppy and it is very easy to miss a shift. Especially 2-3. Not to mention that long throw. Don't hit your knuckles on the radio going for third!
Actually, it is not the shifter that is notchy. Did you move it while it was out of the car? No notchiness at all. It is the transmission that is notchy. It was built in to simulate the original shifters since top loaders don't feel like the old rod and lever shifters.
One last thing, it is the rubber filler in the factory shifter that hides the notchiness. And also what makes the factory shifter so sloppy and inaccurate.
