Default Competitive Driving Mode

Does anyone know what all changes when putting the C5 into Competitive driving mode? I know on the automatics it's supposed to change the shift points but I have a 6-spd so I am curious if this does anything else that's beneficial.

It turns off the traction control but leaves the active handling on.

What does the active handling do, I thought the button was for T.C. and that active handling was the same thing? Can someone please explain this to me. Bob

Traction control prevents wheel spin on acceleration. If spin is detected TC cuts fuel to the engine.

Active handling tries to detect if the car is in a spin. If the AH senses the car is out of sorts it will individually apply brakes to each corner of the car to stabilize the car.

I believe this is a mistake. I've never heard this before either, and have never noticed it. To my knowledge, Competitive Driving is Traction Control off, Active Handling still engaged...no more, no less.

Okay all, I was told that the Competitive Driving mode changes the shift points by the Service Dept Manager of one of the largest local Chevrolet Dealerships. He has been with Chevrolet for over 30 years so I must believe that he knows what he is talking about.

The Service Dept Manager is mistaken. It only turns traction control off.

On "competive" the traction is off and the active handling is on. Very fun to drive in this mode :steering: :steering:

One would think so, one would hope so, & maybe all of us are wrong, but I would sure like to bet a cup of coffee on it.

I would like to thank you all for clearing this up. Since I'm a proud owner of a 6-spd it's a non issue for me. I must say that it's too bad we can't believe Chevrolet when it comes to their own cars. It's a good thing there are forums like this out there to help us all.

I have far more trust in what Chevrolet/GM tells me as opposed to what a dealer tells me. :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

It makes a difference on a 6 speed. With Traction Control turned off, you can blow off a Mustang GT/Camaro from the line no problem. May be tough with Traction Control on. Also, use Competetive Driving mode for autocross, etc.

From experience! Unless you can absolutely handle your vette leave the AH engaged, as it will save your butt. in fact theres been a couple of pics of vettes on the forum where the member had it turned off. I think one was upside down in a ditch with less than 700 miles on it. From my own experience it works great, it took the steering wheel outa my hands and straightened out the car, just about broke my little finger wrestling the wheel away from me though. AH is an :blueangel: in disguise.

In Competitive Driving Mode on 6 speed cars, the traction control is disabled AND the Active Handling program allows for more rotation before cutting in. I have raced with CD mode on (as well as forgotten to put it in CD mode before taking a lap) and it is apparent that CD does change the yaw control computer mappings to allow for more oversteer prior to activating.

As for automatic tranny cars...I don't know, because I wasn't aware that they equipped automatic cars with active handling, because all of you automatic folks never turned anyway! (Aren't 1/4 mile tracks all perfectly straight?)

ok just kidding about that whole automatic thing. :)
