I am thinking about getting a cam for my A4. Could someone recommend a good setup for mostly low to mid gains for an A4.
Thanks in advance!
Give the Vettedoctors a call forum member "Redgar" is running their cam only setup in his A4. His car has run back to back 11.6s with 3.42 gears and stock cats. His car is putting down 385 RWHP, IMHO this combo is hard to beat.
I went with the Comp Cams 212/218 for my A4. It made 357 RWHP with mild head modifications and idles quite smoothly at 700. The midrange pull is superb.
I believe Edgar Perez AKA "Redgar" has the fastest "cam only" A4 on the forum (11.6s @ 115 MPH). His cam only A4 has run as good as many stock displacement cars with cam and heads.
Thanks for the replies guys! God, I love this forum :D
Ok, Matt - why do you say I would need a converter? Is it b/c I would lose low end power and I would need to keep the rpm high to use the new cam profile?
How would the one you suggested compare with WallstAl's B1?

that was thru 3.42 gears correct?....and what tires, intake/exhaust stock? just asking, as I met Redgar this weekend but we didn't discuss his mods in depth and that's a great time :D....I just want a solid point of reference for my goals this year :D
You must stay with a pretty small camshaft if you do not have a torque converter. A 216/224 114 is about as big as I would go without a converter.
Agree with Matt... I made the mistake of putting too large of a cam in my 85 and found the car just not drivable in town because of the surging (stock convertor). Careful with the cam selection and you should be just fine :)
You should certainly get a torque converter also! :yesnod: If you go with something like a PT2400, PT2900, or Yank 3000. . .you won't lose low-end power.
Also, as others have mentioned. . .REDGAR is the guy to speak with.

Mark, Edgar was running 3.42 gears with stock cats, I am not positive but I think he is running Corsa Indys. I am pretty sure he was running BFG 315 DRs when he ran the back to back 11.6s. He is also running headers and an ST3500, I believe he was still running the LS1 intake at the time . His heads are STOCK!!!. Perhaps Edgar will chime if I am wrong about anything.

....just wanted to know if it was "cam only" meaning that's the only mod, or just refererring to the block/displacement/heads, etc :D

You would need a converter to allow some slippage at idle so that you could raise your idle speed slightly without making your car want be surging forward when you at a stop with your foot on the brakes. So the trick is, no converter, then you have to get a very smooth idling, low duration, low lift camshaft so that you do not have to raise the idle speed much at all.
Also, when you go with a bigger cam, your motor will lack power in the 1000-2000rpm range and the converter helps keep you above that.
The MTI 221/221 114 cam that Al has is actually a very good cam, but I would not go with it without a torque converter. You will have to stay under 220 degrees duration if you plan to stick with the stock converter in my opinion.
I have a custom camshaft ground by/for The Vette Doctors but I don't know the specs. I would call it a moderately agressive cam. It is very streetable and idles around 900 rpm.
Yes I did run 2 11.6s in it on day.
It had at the the time
ProFlow Intake
stock ls1 manifold
long tube headers
Vette Doctors Camshaft with upgraded valve train components
Dyno tuning by the Vette Doctors
Corsa Indy Pace
BFG 315's (no tread) on CCW 17 x 12 wheels
3.42 Z06 rear
Yank ST 3500
Car and driver weight of 3540
TruCool 11" x 11" x1.5" trans cooler (trans around 130 degrees)
The most important ingredient ~ -500 DA
