Pulling in my driveway (fortunately) and before I could shut down I heard a loud clattering like a rod knocking and though the car will still idle it has no power so I assume I've blown a head gasket f%$#, I havn't even had time to run the car hard, another advantage of having a blower I guess, fortunately my 436ci "NA" will be here in a couple of weeks. Here's to cometic head gaskets :U and  (upps wrong finger)
Theres probably not 4000 miles on this motor and it has rarely seen boost for very brief periods of time, I have heard that this is not uncommon with the cometic's wish I had heard that sooner, Now my car will have to sit for a the next month while we drop in the new motor I'm sure not going to spend a bunch of coin to put the gasket in just to drive for an extra couple of weeks. Thanks for the vote of symphathy however---bill
Bill,
You need to at least confirm that no coolant is getting into the cylinders... If you let it sit with coolant in the cylinders it will be rusted solid in less than a week. Take the spark plugs out and give it a compression check to confirm your diagnosis and check for water... BTW, replacing a head gasket is not all that difficult... Get to work man, and fix it. :D
Shirl
Thanks Shirl, I'm affraid thats what I'm going to have to do as if I'm not busy enough, but you're right I can't let it sit if coolant is getting in, even though my block is going back for a core and will be resleaved I don't think Wade would appreciate having to open it up with a cutting torch :lolg:
I have went through lots of cussing about head gaskets on normaly asperated 11 and 12 to 1 ls-1 / 6 engines and now I think that with ARP studs a little ACE Hardware silicone might keep things sealed. ie: don't blame it just on the gasket. :skep:
Well, actually I owe Cometic an appology at this point, I checked compression and it was s@#$ on #8 but no signs of coolant in the cylinder or leaking anywhere and the compression in the other 3 was fine. This leaves piston, rings or valve spring so I pulled the valve cover and low and behold the exhaust valve spring is broken enough for the end to slip out from under the retainer. I am borrowing a compressor and spring tool and will see if the valve seals with the compressed air :blueangel: if so a new spring and I should be back on the road. The spring is still substantial enough in place where I doubt it hit the piston :blueangel: as you can see I threw several prayers in there. I just need this thing to run well for another 3 weeks or so till the new motor is dropped in.===Thanks for the support---Bill
