Default Calling All 2002 LS1 Owners - Trying to uncover problem

I am asking for assistance from all 2002 LS1 owners. I have uncovered a situation with my wife's 2002 vert and need to have you all help with some research to see who else has this issue. It seems that the pcv system on her car is not the pcv system that is supposed to be on a 2002 LS1 motor, but actually the pcv system that was on pre-2001 LS1 motors. It all started when workin on my valve cover project. I looked at her pcv system and noticed that she had a second breather tube coming out of the top of the passenger side valve cover towards the firewall and running back behind the motor. This was a surprise to me since my LS6 did not have this second breather on the passenger side. I went to the dealer and ordered a passenger side valve cover and when it arrived, it did not have the breather in the back, just the one towards the front that goes to the throttle body. When questioned about this discrepency and the fact that the 2002 cover sent to me would not work on her 2002 motor, the dealer couldn't answer why the discrepency. The only thing that he could find out was that the motors that are pre-2001 have the second breather and 2001 on up do not. Why does her 2002 have the breather (and thus a pre-2001 pcv system)? They couldn't provide any answer. I am wondering how many of you have this same issue so we can approach GM appropriately regarding this very important issue. Could you all please remove your passenger side fuel rail cover and tell me if you have a second breather tube coming off the top of your passenger side valve cover that goes towards the back of the motor? Also, could you please provide me with ALL the information contained on the sticker located on top of the drivers side wheel well (under the hood) that shows the pcv routing? I thank you all for taking the time to check this out.

I won't have a chance to check until after work, but you might want to check your build date and see if it was among the early '02s. Mine was built in April of 2002, and it has the single breather. I think they did a running change early in '02 run with the rings - maybe the breahter changed then too??

Just conjecture - but I think GM needs to address your concern.

I did consider that theory, but apparently the change in pcv system took effect for all 2001's. Gwen's was built in March of 2002 and is a 2002 model. Also, the gentleman at the the dearlership stated that if there was some sort of midyear change, it would be noted in the parts listing.

M '02 was built in June of 2001; and my friends 2001 was built in March of
'01.

Both ours have the single tube.

Mine was built in Feb 02 and has a second tube on the top of the passengers side valve cover-why do you feel this is a problem?

It is a problem if you order parts for a 2002 and they do not work.
Also, I would like to be sure that 2002 vehicles such as ours are not being equiped with 2001 or 2000 motors.

Just pulled my passenger side cover. If you are talking about the tube that comes out of the valve cover just above and between plugs #6 and #8, then I have it too. My car was built 4/10/02, 1 year ago tomorrow!!!!

Good Point-Let me know how this goes...Perhaps a pic posted would clarify beyond any doubt what you are referring to. It would seem unlikely that GM would be putting earlier engines in newer cars..but then who knows????

that may be the difference between a LS-1 and a LS-6 engine is the PCV system. remember that there is a PCV system change along with the re ring on the oil burning problem :chevy

It is looking like it may be possible that the re-ring & pcv system was modified around April/May of 2002 and the parts list for the valve covers doesn't accurately reflect the date that the change occured. But then, I'm confused about the car being built in mid 2001 having only the one breather. It could be that that particular car was still in possession of a dealer when the a tb came out and the dealer went ahead and made a modification prior to its sale. It's possible.

the change in the rings was at the start of LS-6 2002 production and a couple of weeks later the LS-1 got the change.so that means that the change took place in may or june of 2001. :chevy

Consider this: The engines are built at a different plant from the Corvettes, and they may be on a slightly different schedule (I don't know, this is just a theory). I know some people with early 2002s feel they got the old style rings before the change took effect, and this may be the reason (Mine is an early 2002, and I wonder about this myself).

Also, the dearler or someone else could have made a mistake. Have you conclusively ruled out the posibility? They could have mistakenly ordered the wrong part and not realized it, or the order could be correct but the wrong part still got shipped. That has happened to both me and my dad. My dad ordered a new front bumper cover for his Chevy truck and they sent the cover for a GMC. It didn't take us long to figure out why it wouldn't fit

We know it was the part ordered as indicated for 2002; the parts guy and I looked very carefully at this.
