Hey Guy's, i am an Aussie with 98 C5 M6 and just cannot believe this 1st to 4th lockout on the gearbox, i mean this is downright dangerous and i can't see how it passed safety spec's, but anyway what can i do to get rid of it ?????? BTW my gearbox has started crunching a bit changing into 6th is this a usual problem, or is it just the synchro ? i thought a synchro on 6th should last longer than all the other gears?/ it's done about 41,000 Miles..also can you take off the low tyre sensors they drive me mad as i usually run the rears on 24lbs when there's no load on and it keeps telling me low pressure...
On the gear box lockout...Look for CAGS Eliminator from any one of the forum vendors. $20 or less and you will eliminate the forced shift. You can make a DIY eliminator yourself, but the ones you buy have a nice clean plug and it's about a 5 minute install.
Crunching going into 6th? I'd change the trans fluid first and see if the problem goes away. Mine did when I replaced with Redline fluid. The stock fluid or other will probably work just as well.
Give it about 500 miles after the change.
24lbs. in the rear is TOO low. Check the sticker on the door. You should be around 30 - 32 for street, lower if you drag race. You'll have to experiment but street tires probably between 26 - 28 on the strip.
A prior reply mentioned the small harnes/plug to eliminate the skip-shift, use it and don't just unplug it. For $20US it's worth the plug.
On the 6th gear - I had a similar problem with 3rd gear. They lubricated the shifter, changed the trans "fluid", but no improvement. Long story short, it was an out-of-round blocking ring. However, it didn't shift right about 60% of the time. If yours does it all of the time, it may very well be the synchro. Eitherway, the trans would have to come out.
Buy the way, Austrailia is one of my favorite places in the world. I worked for Holden in Melbourne. G'Day to you.
