Is removing the MAF a good mod? will it damage anything? How do you do it? Pictures would help or a how to? How much do I expect to get in terms of HP from removing the MAF screen and how long does it take to remove it?
Re: how do you remove the MAF screen? (MEDVETTE99)
IMHO, leave it in. I pried it out of my Camaro's MAF in a few minutes with a single bladed screwdriver, but I don't think that it was worth it. After more closely examining the delicate wires in there, I was sorry I did it. The everyday benefits of leaving it in - protecting the sensors, straightening the flow for the sensors - to me, outweigh the negligible benefit of a little more air. Live and learn...
I left it in my vette. The stock MAF is good enough for 400+BHP engines, it's not a cosmetic mod, so no need to mess with it for now, IMHO.

Mark the side and take it apart by removing the screws then hammer out the screen. This will prevent ruining the sensors and it's easy to screw back together since the markings you placed on the side will insure correct reassembly.
Re: how do you remove the MAF screen? (MEDVETTE99)
I guess everyone will have an opinion, so here is mine.
I have mine removed after owning my C5 for 2.5 months. I research the hell out of this issue on the CF, then ultimately, I caved and asked my friends, one is a stock drag car racer, the other is the vette customer support tech from my chevy dealer. Both agreed it was a okay, because the stock MAF screen installed by GM is restrictive. I was convinced by the chevy vette tech to remove the MAF screen because he told me that all '02 Z06, he has worked on have MAF screens none and the '01-'02 use the same MAF unit.
I have '01 coupe and the removal the of the screen has made the throttle much smoother and spontaneous. I cannot and will NOT compare my C5 to a camaro, a vette is a vette, AND not a camaro (as the post above opinioned on this thread).
Good luck on your decision. Check this thread that I posted because I am helping another CF member with a C5 FRC on MAF screen removal (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=534452).
FYI, I also polished my '01 MAF housing, it helps and removing the screen is a good start!
Re: how do you remove the MAF screen? (MEDVETTE99)
MEDVETTE99,
Make sure you remove the MAF and take the ends off before removing the screen. You can then pull the screen out with a needle nose pliers. You wont be able to use it again anyway. It's not much more work and it's safer for the electronics. You can also port the ridge if you want to. I completely agree with edmaverik's comments and have found that my HT runs better and has cut down the richness as evidenced by my exhaust tips not being so black an sooty anymore.
edmaverik, what did you use to port the MAF? I'm thinking about doing this myself. - C.
Mr. C, I used a dremel with a polishing wheel and Mother's metal polish to lube up polishing wheel. If you want to see PIC, drop me an email, I will post pic of my polished MAF housing on my website tonight...STAY POSTED!
