Even though I've only been a C5 owner for 1-week, it's already time for new rear tyres!! (no, they weren't new when I bought the car!! :D )
The current rears are the original run-craps, which are now down to 2mm of tread (they've covered 26k miles) and have already given me a couple of frights (back-end breaking loose unexpectedly whilst cornering, etc) and are pretty frightening in the rain / mud!
The previous owner put Michelin Pilot SX's on the front, so I planned on getting Pilot Sport's on the rear. Changed my mind when I got them priced-up though... $425 each (fitted)! So, I've narrowed the choice down to either Dunlop SP9000's or Toyo Pro-Xes (both about $255 ea. fitted). Anyone have any experience of either tyre? Being in the UK and as the car is a daily driver, I need a good all-rounder (wet traction is important for those occassional down-pours which lead to standing water on the freeway).
I switched from the Goodyear F1-SC tires on my Z06 to Toyo Proxes T1S's when they wore out, specifically to get a tire that sheds water well. The Proxes have held up well to minor abuse and perform quite well on dry pavement (and exceptionally well on wet, no more hydroplaning!!), so I am very happy with them.
I can't speak for the Dunlops directly (with regards to Corvette tires), but I will not ever buy another set from them after the pieces of crap that they put on my Pathfinder when I bought it, it's the only 4 wheel drive vehicle I have ever had traction problems with on wet pavement because of those stupid tires. Switched the tires to Michelins, and it's wonderful now.
I have had sp9000 on a 95 MB E400 and they were great in dry and wet but wear out fast. I just changed out the Toyo proxies on the Z06 they are great for the street, not bad on the track, took a first place in auot-x with them, but they are awesome in the rain.
I would go with all 4 tires the same if I was you. I had 4 PZeros waiting when the Toyos wore out.
I've spoken to a lot of people who've been impressed by the Toyos. I also had difficulty keeping up with a BMW M5 fitted with them when I went round Snetterton on my old runcraps. My personal experience with Dunlops is that they are OK in the dry but lose grip like crazy if the road surface is merely damp. I avoid Dunlop like the plague now.
I got rid of my runflats a month ago and had a set of 4 Falken FK451s fitted for 545 quid including balancing, fitting and 90 minutes on the alignment rig ! So far they are much nicer in every way that the runcraps but it hasn't rained enough to assess their wet weather performance.
 Thanks for the responses guys (and hello to my fellow Brit... that was a great price on the Falkens, esp. with all that alignment time!). I'm swaying towards Toyos. I know it's advisable (and nicer) to have 4-matching tyres, but I simply refuse to pay over 50% more for the Pilot Sports... I could buy myself a Blackwing with the saving I'll make by going with the Toyos! :)
Here's looking forward to more grip and more predictable / safer handling characteristics!
