I had this happen to me one night after a meeting. A friend took me home (hated to leave my baby outside overnight!). The next day, I put the key in and the column unlocked immediately. I drove straight to the dealer where I bought the car ('00 vert). When I picked it up, they said there was no problem, no codes, so they didn't do anything!
It happened once again, same kind of deal about unlocking after a period of time. Back in the garage, and I didn't drive the car until I installed the CL bypass. The CL failed again during the install procedure. I was finally lucky that the CL unlocked with the ignition on, and at that time I just unplugged the cable from the CL. When I turned off the key, the CL couldn't close since the cable was unplugged.
After installing the bypass, I got the Service Column Lock display on the DIC. So I finally unplugged the battery, waited awhile, and then reconnected. I'm glad I put the bypass in, it's not worth taking a risk of being stranded again.
