Can I remove the engine without removing the torque tube?
Can I unbolt the torque tube from the bellhousing or do I need to unbolt the bellhousing from the engine?
Thanks, Dale
Looking at my Helms manuals (I have a MN6 2001 vert) it appears you will need to drop the rear end and torque tube assembly in order to be able to withdraw the crankshaft end of the torque tube before you pull the engine. There may be some guys here on the Forum that have actually pulled their engine and have found a trick or two to avoid all that extra work (I usually find some of my own as well) but going by the book, looks like you're in for a lot of work.
If you remove the engine from the bottom of the car, you do not need to remove the torque tube assembly. But you will need to have a support for the tube with the engine out of the car. I wished that I could tell you how the GM manual explains it but it would take a few pages.

:iagree: Support the torque tube, then lower the engine attached to the subframe or remove the motor from the top if on jackstands. Contact nevrenuf(tomc5@bellsouth.net) as he is about as knowledgeable as they come when you are talking about removing engines/trannys in a C5. We have removed his engine/tranny in his garage numerous times with the car on jackstands.
i R&R'ed my motor from the top rather than bottom. whether you come out top or bottom you dont have to drop the rear end or tube. yes, you will have to support the tube at the front end when the motor is out. I made a little bracket out of strap metal that spans from one side of the tube tunnel to the other and bolts into one each of the holes for the torq tube tunnel cover. then let the tube rest on this strap. very simple.
