From what i've read, a "regular" vette with 3.90's is equivelant to a stock Z06 with 3.42's. I have noticed a few Z06's out there with 4.10's.....What would that be equivelant to in a regular vette?
Re: Question between Z06 & C5 gearing.... (NYtoCA)
Not sure how the ratio would compare but I really don't see the point of 4.10s in a Z06. With the stock rear end, gears 1-3 are perfectly geared and 1st can't hold above 4000 rpm if the temperature drops below 65 degrees! The biggest challenge in a stock or even lightly modded Z06 is traction. 4.10s won't help at all on this front.
Add 50-100 rwhp hp and torque and the stock Z06 won't even hold 2nd...
Re: Question between Z06 & C5 gearing.... (Bertrand)
I would think the M12 would be the "cats meow" of trannies for the C5 with even just 3.42s. The stock MN6 stinks for launching. Its too much gear. Its like your taking off in second gear. Its too hard to modulate. A short numerical 1st gear would improve this greatly. I come from the mustang world where a 3.27 first gear with 3.73 rear gears are the norm. The gears 1st thru 3rd are short and easy to modulate your power. Yes, I know a lot less power, but still the same concept. Just my .02.

Actually I think it would be the MN6 with 3.90 gears.
Reason being that the MN6 is close ratio in gears 1 to 4, the M12 is close ratio ONLY in gears 1 to 3. When you hit 4th in a M12 the ratio is 3.42, when you hit 4th in a MN6/3.90's the ratio is 3.90.
Also, contrary to popular belief, the MN6 is rated for more torque than the M12.
The downside of all this for the MN6 is that the 3.90 gears are themselves not as strong as the 3.42, especially the shot peened Z06 version.

Well put. However, w/ all the drag racing people have been doing I've yet to hear a ring & pinion failure on the 3.90 & 4.10. If anything were to break it's the output shaft.

1st MN6 with 3.90 x 2.66= 10.374 MN12 with 3.42 X 2.97 = 10.157
2nd MN6 with 3.90 x 1.78 = 6.942 MN12 with 3.42 x 2.07 = 7.709
3rd MN6 with 3.90 x 1.30 = 5.07 MN12 with 3.42 x 1.43 = 4.890
5th MN6 with 3.90 X .74 = 2.886 MN12 with 3.42 x .84 =2.872
6th MN6 with 3.90 x .50 = 1.95 MN12 with 3.42 x .56 = 1.915
Check my math but that should give you a pretty good idea what the rear wheels see in each gear.
