Default Z06 engine differences

What's the difference between my '99 LS1 engine and the Z06? I'm wondering what I need to get to that 405 HP. Warranty is out so it's time to start some mods.

Cam, Heads, Intake, but if you are going to that expense you can far surpass the 405 number.....

The most important mod to get there is the cam. You can go bigger than the Stock Z06 cam, and your car will drive just as nice and smooth.
You can get there with cam, headers, manifold, TB, and air cleaner. Go for ported heads for another 20+ HP.
Remember the Z06 has 3.90 equivalent gears so you'll need gears to.

By the cam being the most important mod I mean that it you took a bone stock 1999 vette engine and added ported or high flow heads ONLY, you would only see 10-20hp gain. If you took the same bone stock 1999 vette engine and added a nice 224/563/112 cam ONLY, you would see 30-40hp gain.

add them up and you get 60 hp. kinda funny compared to the 500 rwhp heads/cam cars were hearing about on the forum. was it 476rwhp the last post i noticed? cant remember. 176 rwhp = 202-210 flywheel

something sounds funny..

If my memory serves me,I believe the block is different as well. Arn't there
ports cast in the LS6 block between the cylinder walls (below the pistons) that
allow for rapid pressure equalization when the piston moves down? It's supposed to allow the engine to spin up faster.

By mid model year of 2001 all C5's received the Z06 style better breathing block. The only difference between Z06 short block and C5 short block from this point on, is the cam of course, and the Z06 pistons are better material/short skirt design.

Remember the transmission is different (ZF I think) the gearing (ratios) in 1st, and 2nd is lower this helps getting the revs up in the 4000 RPM range so you can benifit from the cam. I asked John at 21st Centry Mussle Cars if lower rear end gears would help, "He said the trick is the Z/06 transmission with the revised ratios." I have LS6 heads and LPE cam, my next mod is the trans. If anyone has more info on the trans it would be great.

All ratios in the M12 trans are different except 4th.

6th is .56 vs .5 for the MN6.
Different case, etc, etc....

George, save yourself some time and aggrevation. If you want a Z06 don't try and build one yourself piece by piece...let GM do it for you...buy one! I went through the same decision process myself recently and discovered there are SOOO many improvements in the Z06 compared to the other Vette models, tires, tranny, engine, suspension, exhaust etc. etc that I gave up trying to beef up my vert and went and bought a Z06. I have been much happier since. :auto:

I just like messing with the car. A new Z06 would be nice, but not a FRC. My wife and I like to take the top off and cruise. I am adding the screens and rear brake ducts. My Borla quad stindgers arrived yesterday and I should have the brake ducts and chrome Z06 wheels this week. I'd kind of like to do a bit to the motor while I'm at it too. That can wait though. We're holding out to see what the C6 has to offer before we get another one (number 7). Thanks for the feedback.

Yea I know what you mean about dropping the top from time to time. I had to reach a compromise with my bride on that one. I wanted the performance, she wanted the vert and A4 tranny so she got to keep the vert and I got to spend 50k on the Z06! Marriage is blissful! :D

I had a coupe for three years and no head and cam package would ever put it in the league of the Z06 I have now.

I have to tell you from experience..You Will Have NO regrets if you just get yourself into the Z06.

I too thought about doing a head cam package, all the equity I had in my car, price etc..etc..but, the thing is...The Z, right out of the box..IS AWESOME.

I drove my coupe after i bought the Z because I still have a few weeks on my lease and the difference is night and day...The coupe is heavier, looser, slower. The gearing is not as fast, the motor is obviously not as refined and....everything you're thinking about doing to your coupe, has already been done to this car.

So it's not just the engine...it's the complete package that gets you. These cars are so scary light and super quick, that J-Rod is pulling 11 second timeslips on street tires...stock!

The General got it right this time...take advantage of the 0% if you can.
