Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass
My car is heading back to the dealer for the 4th time due to the the column lock crap. It's locked up twice, third time got the recall fix done to it and now it has locked up again even with the fix.:mad
Thinking about getting a bypass now but wanted to know if it causes problems or trips any codes on the display. Where can I get one and are there any tricks or tips for installing one?
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
blackvette1,
A trusted Corvette mechanic on another forum has posted information that Chevrolet has reported problems with the PCM, based upon a lack of feedback voltage from the column lock bypass. I don't have much information, but I am removing my bypass and having the Chevrolet "fix" done to my car.
Good luck.

Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
Got one installed in my FRC, no problems whatsoever. Hard to believe the "too little feedback voltage" problem, since that's what the PCM looks for. If the feedback's not within limits, a code is thrown. Now, if you just disconnected the CL and left it open, I could see that being a problem (as well as the ever-present code).
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (VetteDrmr)
This is how it is supposed to work..
The BCM provides the steering column control function which allows the column to be electronically locked or unlocked. The BCM provides two outputs, column lock drive (A) and column unlock drive (B). The BCM can apply a ground or battery output on the column lock drive (A) CKT 1603 or column lock drive (B) CKT 1604 depending on the desired steering column lock motor position.
The BCM controls the position of the steering column lock motor based on the following input information:
Ignition position
Key IN ignition status
Key OUT of ignition status
Steering column lock feedback switch
PASS-Key® system
PCM password information
System voltage
The BCM supplies the ground to the steering column motor through the key OUT of ignition switch which is integrated within the ignition switch. This prevents the BCM from locking the steering column with the key IN the ignition. The BCM supplies battery voltage to the steering column lock motor through BCM 2 fuse #23. The BCM uses a feedback switch which is integrated within the steering column lock motor in order to monitor the motor position. The feed back switch allows the BCM to determine if the commanded position was actually accomplished. If the BCM is unable to determine the steering column lock state, due to a steering column lock system malfunction or by disconnecting the steering column motor with the ignition in the ON position, the BCM will enter a fail enable mode and prevent steering column lock operation. The PCM will also inhibit vehicle motion by disabling fuel. To clear the BCM fail enable mode, disconnect the BCM fuse #25 for 15 seconds. The BCM also monitors its circuitry for the column lock/unlock drive (A) circuit. If the BCM detects a malfunction present a DTC will set in the BCM memory. Always perform the BCM Diagnostic System Check before attempting any diagnosis on the steering column lock system.
blackvette1.. I have never seen a 6 speed recall fail, can you tell me what they have been replacing?
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (bowtiebandit)
bowtiebandit,
The first 2 times it locked up was before the recall was out so they just replaced the column lock I'm guessing. The third time I took it in for the recall and they did the supposed "fix" I think you are referring too under the recall. I'm going to take it in this afternoon and find out for sure what they did when I brought it in for the recall and what they are going to do this time.
They dealer told me how to try and unlock the wheel so I can drive it to there so hopefully it works so I don't have to have it towed out of my garage which is a pain. They said while turning the key to the on position (not starting the car) yank the wheel hard in one direction at the same time. We'll see if it works.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
Any news? I must confess before the recall I was doin what seemed like one every other day, in fact I have one on my lift now for the leaky butt that I know I did 6 times before the recall.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (bowtiebandit)
blackvette,
If that is a 6 speed, they should have modified the relay wiring and replaced the relay up over the BCM for the ECL.
If they did not do it properly you could have a problem.
The automatic repair is pretty easy but the 6 speed fix takes a functioning brain.
Something that is hard to find sometimes in the industry.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
The car is at the dealer now so I am waiting to hear back. I believe they said they've only had 2 fail after the recall fix so I guess mine is the 3rd. The trick to get the steering wheel loose worked so I was able to drive it to the dealer and not get it towed.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
I've had teh CLB for almost 3 years (22K miles) and no problems ever. I reviewed the schematics of the GMs column lock before installing the CLB and it's very straight forward - it receives the lock/unlock voltage from the BCM and sends back the proper feedback voltage to simulate the lock is in the correct position.
I trust the CLB much more than the GMs crappy lock design and the dealer's monkey boys - I've had problems with simple oil changes from them.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
I may exercise my CLB more than most because I do several events a year that have me getting out of the car every mile to support runners. in one case, around Lake Tahoe, it is 75+ times in a day, and have never had a problem in the 3 years it has been installed.
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (blackvette1)
I have had the C5 Solutions CLB on my '98 A4 for 2 1/2 years. No problems what so ever :). But, with the recall about to expire (I think July 3, 2003?) I'm wondering if I should get the Chevy fix  I always thought the Chevy fix was permanent, but have heard there have been some failures. Don't know what to do. Think I'll go have a beer and think it over :lolg:
Re: Anyone ever have problems after installing column lock bypass (bowtiebandit)
I have the CLB and a problem.
I had to jumpstart the car the other day cause I left the interior lights on. Ever since, it has given me the service column lock message on the DIC. WTF?! I don't have one anymore! I cleared all the codes and this one still pops up when I turn on the car. Any ideas?!
This car is so f'ing maddening sometimes!!! :mad :mad :mad
