I am interested in sticking on a set of long tube headers and have gone thru a search in looking how much "noise" is increased? Nothings pops up so that is the question. How much "noise" do you get from headers compared to the stock exhaust manifolds? In my younger years (a lot younger!), I put headers on a '65 Mustang (hi-rise intake, cam, high compression pistons, etc.) I always remember that "pinging" sound coming from them. I've just quieted the car down with matting it (thanks Mike Mercury and Frost King insulation!). Now I'd like to get a little more power but keep it quiet. (at least on the inside.) Those that are running headers. Your thoughts please.
I don't know how much help I can be but here goes. Firstly, I have a Z06, which I am sure has less sound deadening materials to begin with. I had long tubes put in along with a head and cam package also no cats. I kept the Z06 exhaust though. Totally different sound after the mods. Louder, but not too bad, Certainly less noise than with the "loud" exhaust packages. and of course with that lovely lumpy cam sound coming through as well.

apparently you and I didn't read the same threads :D
I have FLP's with high flow cats, x-pipe and stock mufflers. The interior noise is not much louder than stock. Exterior noise is noticebly louder (my car had pre-cats) and better sounding. But not yet quite loud enough - I plan on replacing the stock cat backs with GHL's or Tubi. I also notice the typical ticky noise from the header tubes when outside the car.
FLP, complete system, with Z06 exhaust. Much louder than Z06 exhaust alone. Most of the interior sound occurs in lower gears when pushing it a little or going uphill. Once in OD it is quiet inside. I like it. :steering:
Rod - I just noticed that you live in Gresham. I have a Portland address, but am actually in north Gresham. If you would like to hear my setup, I would be willing to meet you somewhere.
I'm running TTS Longtubes and Borla Stingers and I'll admit the headers definitely woke her up. In normal driving you just notice a much deeper throbbing tone, but open her up and it's like a Winston Cup car on a short track from outside the car. From inside it's just a wonderful wail that makes you want to keep her to the floor and see how long she can scream!
Oh and she pulls pretty good from 105 to 130 now. :-) Can't wait to get the tuning right, new tires(next two months), and new gears(this fall I hope).
Not that I was speeding on the interstate or anything again..... :auto:
Check mods below. I have LG LT headers, offroads, X-pipe, and Borla exhaust, and I love it. Wifey loves it too!! In fact it's really not loud enough for me. I will eventually change out the Borla catback exhaust, for a set of Borla Stingers. :yesnod: :yesnod:
YOU KNOW YOU WANT IT!! GO FOR IT!!! :steering: :hurray:
Mine got louder....(FLPs w/Cats)...I have the Borla, non stinger, 4 tip and it was too quiet. The headers made a nice improvement in volume (maybe 20% louder), but its still not loud enough for me. I am waiting on a set of GHLs...
The real volume would come from removing the cats :yesnod:

Hey Bandit...I have the Borla non-Stinger exhaust too, but with out cats, and it only gets loud when you get on it.
:banghead:
That's why I'm planning on changing it out to a set of Stingers, before too long. :yesnod:
