If you don't have one, installing a good high stall T/C(SY3500 for example) will give you the most dramatic improvement in performance by FAR( excluding nitrous) in an A4. You can get great results by just having your PCM reprogramed for firmer, faster shifts. IMO a shift kit is not really needed. Check the Yank Converters web site under FAQs Yank does not recommend using shift kits with their converters.
For what it's worth, I had the same thoughts, so I ordered the Transgo kit and went a step further & bought a super servo to boot. I also found out that for late models, you should de-activate the "torque management" settings on the computer. How? With a programmer.
To make a short story long, the Predator, for example, automatically disables torque management, and as long as it's hooked up, you can adjust your shift response such as shift speed & firmness. DUH! The Transgo shift kit is still sitting behind my desk in my office (two months later). The programmer made a decent enough change for now. I might get around to the shift kit later on. :smash:
I've had Hypertech and programmed everything it would do for my 98 A4. Actually, it did a good job with the feeling of the car through the shifts. When I removed it, I immediately missed it! I went for about six months before installing the Transgo Kit (a week ago) and installed two washers out of the three available. According to my SOTP meter, the Transgo performs better. I have thought about installing the third washer to see how that feels. ;) Programmer is more expensive than the Transgo - only if you install the kit. Be warned, it is a very tedious job and requires a decent amount of ability. The programmer is easily installed. :steering:
With programming only, you will always have a much firmer 1-2 shift. The Transgo allows you to drill the feed holes to equalize each shifts firmness. I used 1 shim and .150 hole size for 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. I used Edit to make normal driving slightly firmer and very firm at 50% + throttle position. Works for me but each can set it up to their liking. :flag
