I have heard that you need to change it out every year or so...is that right? I've had my vette for about 2 years and never changed it out. Should I change it out and if so what kind should I get. I've never done this before, hell I don't even know where the fuel filter is, but if someone has a write-up on it or something...can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
GM does not list a recommended change time for the fuel filter. If your car is 2K or newer, the filter also contains the pump. I have one and am thinking about doing a change on my 51K miles car. I know some have never changed! It is located on the driver's side, near the rear wheel and can be a pain to do; I'm procrastinating.... :D
True, GM does not have a scheduled interval for service on the fuel filter.
Most cars I recommend replacing it 2 years or 24K, on a Vette I would have it done with your 30K service.
It's inside the tunnel under the vehicle, to the left of the transmission in the rear.
If you have an automatic, I would pay to have it done, sometimes you have to remove the left side muffler for adequate access.
It's not a big deal but it needs to be on a lift.
6 speeds are a breeze. There are some precautions you need to take so be careful and put out your cigarette first.
2 years after I bought my 98 LS1 powered Formula I changed out my fuel filter and it had roughly 27k on it at the time and we opened it up and it looked perfectly clean inside, so the filter could've gone longer for sure. But also, it depends on the quality of the fuel in your area. I wouldn't risk it, so I'd change it out every second year for sure.
What I do so I do not get stranded in the middle of nowhere a 3AM, we all know that fuel filters never block up close to home or when service or parts facilities are open. When I buy a used car, I put in a new fuel filter, I do not know what the prior owner did of what kind of gas he used. Every 2 years I put in a new fuel filter as a form of cheap keep running insurance. Just my .02 :smash:
That subject just came up on Z06vette.com and C4C5 gave a good reply. I just changed mine recently, easy job but the $$$ for the filter is hard to swallow :( :(
:mad I changed out my filter at 30,000 then found out that it should run much longer. No problem on cost :mad just like the movie. "Fist full of Dollars" :mad In round numbers $200 at the dealer. :mad
I changed mine after 3 years, but only 17,000 miles. SHOULD HAVE DONE IT SOONER!!!!! Maybe we just get crappy gas here, but the difference in restriction was SIGNIFICANT. Much easier to blow through the new one. My Vette mechanic recommends replacement at 10,000 niles, and now I believe him!
The ACDelco number on that filter is GF822. GM Dealer cost is 31.46, so you should be able to get it for around 45.00 or go through gmpartsdirect. I get them from my Delco wholesaler for 22.42.

RockAuto.com has it for $41.99. Didn't check S/H but they're usually pretty reasonable.
