Guys, give me the tutorial on these ratios. What's the 2.73 mean? It's the ratio of what to what? I'm still trying to figure out why I've got the slowest stock vette. I didn't know the performance ratio was important unitl I started reading the forum. I'm an accountant, not an engineer. Any explanation would be appreciated!!
Well here goes....Had the vet about 4 months and heading to Roanoke for a meeting.Look in my rear view mirror (from a distance) and I see a yellow vet coming up fast!!!!!As it get's closer I see those black air ducts or brake coolers :D and realize it's a z06.Off goes the a/c,up goes the windows(it's about 85-90 degrees outside) and at this point a yellow z06 is side by side with me.He smiles and waves I point and nail ;) ;) all ready doing 85-90 mph
on 85south I managed to jump him simply because I nailed it 1st but in the end he handed me my *** and when I realize I had no chance of making up those 8 to 10 cars :rolleyes: :rolleyes: he was ahead of me I was looking at
168 mph in a stock 98,c5,2.73 a4.
Safe to go fast?? Of course not. I live in Nevada (Very liberal speeding rules, and many long, straight, open roads, some 20-30 miles long with no curves and flat).
Many of our Corvette Club members have gone 170+, some have pictures of their speedometers at those speeds. We have a small display case at the local Chevy dealer, some of the pics are on display.
I have no idea how fast a C5, auto or 6spd tops out, so I can't get into the argument. BUT, we do have some pretty exciting drives into the desert. ART
have a 02 A4 coupe and was at 172 at 5200 in 4th gear at about 2000'. had more to go in the throttle but not in the road. and to all you grandpa out there why did you buy a car like this if you don't drive it the way it was meant to be driven. i read on guy advise "drive it like it was stolen everyday"! :yesnod: :yesnod:
evil-one, you were the one I was originally talking about. I know first hand that the original numbers 150mph was :bs . However, I didn't try to go much faster.
The other thing, the Z06 has a top speed of 175; however, the Coupe has a higher top-speed. I believe it's 185? I could see that the A4 may be limited to somwhere in the upper 170's. . .
Evil, did your car still have more or was that it? :lurk:
Let's start with a known fact: highest measured top-speed of a stock vette was achieved on an MN6 coupe, and it was 172 mph (sea-level, cool air, etc.). With the typical error of 6%, that translates to an indicated speed of 182. Gearing that allows any higher speed than that is useless for top-speed purposes (unless you're going to heavily modify your engine).
Now, let me list the 'theoretical' top speed for each of the ratios mentioned above, and things will start to make sense:
2.73 = 252 mph
3.15 = 213 mph
3.42 = 188 mph
3.73 = 160 mph.
As it can be seen, the 2.73 4th gear is useless for top speed for obvious reasons.

Lingenfelter put a 2.73 rear end for his 226 MPH top speed run for Motor Trend in the March 2000 article on his twin turbo. :smash:
MY 98 coupe couldn't get to 170 with a strong tailwind. That thing was slow. The 2.73 gears really blow. Anyway I think for most cars 155-160 is the limit. Just not enough power to pull the gear.
Now my Z is fast. That badmamajama will pull redline in 5th in less than a mile, at least it seems. The difference between 160 and 175 is a TON.
I do top speed runs all the time because I like it, it's exciting. I always do a cop check and debris check before I mash it though. The road I do it on is straight with no intersections and the highway is divided so I feel pretty safe. I also eat meat from cow's that smoke and chew tinfoil but..............
Why not go out to the road, pin the throttle and tell us how fast you went. Argument settled :thumbs:
I've seen 172 on the clock.....can't remember if I had the 3.42's or the 2.73's at the time. Hit 168 with the top down once but chickened out after my favorite hat blew off. :seeya
:crazy: Hum, this is interesting! Some can and some can't. Being I have mods I can't talk. It seems the 170 barrier is right at the edge. What is really interesting is if these cars are really all stock, than the answer must lay with other factors :confused: Temp, Humidity, fuel, state of tune, etc.
For the guy who asked above 2.73 ratio is the number of times the driveshaft turns in relation to the rear axel. 2.73 drive shaft turns = 1 rotation of the axel.
For those of you who are thinking about doing this, an addition to the ole cookie jar account for your mods, you might just want to pack a couple of grand away (3-4) for the Jlaw mod ahead of time. :jester Cause that is about what it is going to cost ya if ya get your picture took! Thats the John Law fund. For the desert runners, keep yer eye to the sky cause it ani't a po- lice car that is gonna get ya, it's a hello-chopper, or a light aircraft. Ya gotta watch the sky and the highway. I usually have the wife as look out on those runs.
Safety, is no doubt the biggest issue. Yes, a lot of us are driving literally full race cars, suspensions, engines and brakes. even to the point of roll bars and 5 point harness's. So I don't doubt the equip. :flag I remember the wife and I hitting some nice highway going up to Vegas and her remark, was remember the James Dean story! Even in the desert it can happen. At these speeds sub second thought is barely adequate and that does not include reaction time.
Sooo be safe out there when looking for the Holy Grail of speed, on the track and on the street.
More of my non-cents soo I will switch it off. :rant:
So if it don't go chrome it, If ya got it flaunt it.
