I've read so many different things about this. I'm looking for facts, not opinions, to base my decision on. Some people say it makes no difference. Some people say you lose power. Some people say it's an instant gain of 5-7 RWHP on pre-Y2K cars (I have a 98). Would I need to reprogram the computer to get results from this mod? You better believe that if I can get 5-7 RWHP simply by removing that screen, I'm going to do it! But, if there's no gain, or negative results, I wouldn't bother of course. What are the facts? Who has dynoed their pre-Y2K car before and after and has concrete results, be they positive or negative? I'd love to figure this out once and for all! Thanks for your help!

Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Mean In Green)
I'm not sure there are any hard facts on this. People with the exact same set up have had very different results. I'm with you - if there was a definite gain to be found, I would remove the screen. But since this mod is more of an experiment than a proven gain, mine is still in place.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Mean In Green)
Well I just installed a new SLP 85mm MAF here. The difference between running with the screen and without is this via AutoTap:
- both ltrim banks ran about 1 leaner without the screen. ( no problem since I needed to lean out them aways )
- raw intake volume was about 0.5% to 1.0% higher without the screen.
A little difference, but not much. No dyno numbers, but I would speculate an increase of 1 rwhp :jester

I removed the screen on our 98 but at the same time, we installed a Blackwing. There was a noticeable increase in power but impossible to tell how much was from the air filter and how much from the screen removal. Since the Z06 comes without screens, I figured, what the heck.
BTW, I have experienced zero problems since removing the screen.

See my post from a couple days ago about my before and after times. I did this mod at the track.. There is no gain. I was hoping to get at least something measurable, but I didn't.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (BAD 97 WS-6)
BAD 97 WS6,
I actually didn't put a lot of stock in your test, as I have a 98. See the response to your test by C5BTW which I've pasted below:
"1997-2000 C5's have a 74mm MAF, while 2001 and newer C5's with both the LS1 and LS6 engines have an 85mm MAF.
Removing the MAF screen on a 1997-2000 C5 adds 5-7 rear wheel horsepower. Doing the same on a 2001 and newer C5 LS1 adds little if any horsepower, because their larger diameter MAF's are not as restrictive air flow wise.
Removing the MAF on a 2001 LS6 does add several rear wheel horsepower, because that engine can use more air flow than an LS1. GM removed the MAF screen from 2002 and 2003 LS6's but not from LS1's for this reason."
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Mean In Green)
It takes 50 to 100 miles of driving for the PCM to learn and adjust. So pulling the screen and going straight on the track or a dyno won't show any gains. Re-test after driving and compare results. That's the only way to know for sure how the screen removal affects your car. It's also impacted by your car's Air Fuel Ratio (AFR). My car was so rich (AFR's down to 10.0 from 3000 RPM) that when I pulled the screen my car felt like a new car. So if your lucky and your AFR's are near ideal about 12.5:1 than pulling the screen won't help you, but for folks running RICH like me it helps big time.
But the only way to know is with a wide-band dyno before and after pull.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Mean In Green)
I've talked with Patrick at Vararam said you'll gain CFM's by taking the screen out but you will not notice any gains, with out a dyno and then there small. He also said don't put a larger MAF sensor in because with a larger MAF you slow the air flow down and you really want to keep it moving so your port velocity don't drop. I hope this help.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Mark 84ltblu)
I to have a 98c5 w/the blackwing and the removal of the screen have dropped
my e.t.s from 13.89 to 13.28 with these mods only.I finally got atap and found
the ltft to be 25%.After installing maft vet is much more responsive since very lean condition has been corrected. But in answer to the question screen removal along with the addition of the blackwing had vet running very lean
but it must have needed it to be leaned out to have gotten quicker and a higher mph in the 1/4 mile. :chevy :chevy
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Rays Vet)
The fact is that GM removes the screens from the '02 and up Z06. But they also recalibrated the MAF to accomidate it. I think on a stock car with a stock MAF calibration, it won't do anything.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please!
At the last dynoday that I hosted I dynoed my car in the AM with the screen in. Then took it out and drove it for about 30 miles. I then dynoed it again in the afternoon. I don't have the dyno charts handy...but as I recall I got about 2 HP at the higher RPMs. I will repost when I get my hands on my dyno chart.
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (Charley Hoyt)
I had a Mustang I pulled the sdreen on and it was held in by a big snap ring, easily reversible. Is the one in my 01 z06 held in by press fit or a snap ring? I've heard you have to cut them out and I'm hesitant to do this. Thanks
Re: MAF Screen...Keep or Remove? Facts only please! (fpcopo)
I dyno'd 401.5rwhp with the screen in place on my 2001 coupe. So it is at least good for that level of hp. I think Hib Halverson said it is good for about 2 hp to remove it at the Z06 level of hp.
