My 1998 with 20,000 miles had a squeak at idle. I put some belt dressing on and it made the squeak stop at idle but much it much louder (and annoying) while accelerating.
I've been reading to replace the IDLER PULLEY(s), TENSIONER, BELTS...etc. Anybody have any idea how much all this stuff will cost to replace at my local dealer?
The squeak is an embarassment and needs to disappear ASAP!
do a search and you will see there are many others with this same problem. Mine has been at the dealer 5 times for this, last time about 3 weeks ago and yesterday it started squeeling again. they have replace the belt (3 times), tensioner (twice), cleaned the pulleys and last time the pwr steering pump. All for nothing as it is squeeling again.
I think others have switched to a gatorback belt that is slightly short in length. But mine is being fixed under warranty so I have not tried it.
I gave my 98 a good shot of WD40. It took a couple of trys, but the noise stopped. Many people have this same problem and there seem to be many different reasons. Before you spend the $$$ try some of the less expensive fixes. Good luck!

I took the Vette in for serpentine and A/C belt replacement at the dealer. I was surpised to see they used Dayco belts. The squeaking seems to have disappeared (keeping my fingers crossed).
Anyone have experience with Dayco belts?
The dealer charged me $154...seemed a bit steep! But if the squeak is gone the $$$ was well spent.
I just replaced both belts on my 25K 98 with Gatorbacks, cost $50 total from Autozone, and the belt chirping at idle is gone. The OEM belts on the care were both Dayco's.
When I changed the belt because of the squeak the guy told me to take a toothbrush and clean all the grooves in the pulleys. I did and no squeak. :D
Caution: Do not use the belt dressing :nono: . It will clump in the grooves and while it stops the squeak temporarily it will come back with a vengence :reddevil .
I have a Squeaking 99 FRC I replaced the belt with a Dayco three weeks now the squeak is back again. I orderd a Gatorback wich hasn't arived yet but if I get close to the engine on the drivers side I can hear a high pitch squeal. I don't think it's the belt. I think it might be the idler pulley. I hear a squeal for a second every time I step on the gas. How hard is it to change the idler ? How should I go about this operation. can anyone help?
