Default How hard to remove oil pan?

I need to tap the oil pan for a supercharger oil drainback fitting. I am veryscared of tapping it while on the car as Vortech instructs. I just don't see how you can do it without ending up with a bunch of metal shavings in the pan when you are done. I would prefer to remove the pan, tap the hole, and then clean it out thoroughly.

How hard is it to remove the oil pan?
What major parts need to be removed to do so?
Does the engine need to be lifted/supported or is there enough clearance as is?

Thanx! :hat

I do not know exactly how much effort is involved, I do know that there is some suspension/sub frame piece that must be removed before you can get the oil pan off.

From what I can remember from last July when my oil pan required replacing it was quite a pain in the butt and required a good deal of hours.

I can check my receipt to see how many hours I was charged with changing an oil pan out if you think it would help you with your decision.

I would consider tapping it while on the car and using a magnet stick immediately afterward AND replacing my stock plug with a magnetized one.

Maybe with those precautions you could still sleep at night.

Best of luck to you with you mod!

Hey you got one of them new Aluminum magnets :jester

Seriously...You will need to support the weight of the engine and torque tube from above and then lower the front subframe (crossmember) to be able to remove the oilpan. Not easy unless you have a lift.

If you are going to tap it in place, which is the easiest, I have a few suggestions, Leave the oil in the pan and be ready to catch it, this pushes the drill shavings out. Use HD greas on the tap to trap the thread shavings. Pull and clean it often. After you finish, spray a good heavy shot of brake cleaner into the area to flush out any shaving. Put on a new filter, plug up the hole you just made and fill it with oil, you should be good to go.

I seem to recall reading that there are different oil pans for early/late models, later ones have a 2-piece pan that doesn't require dropping of the subframe. I could definitely be wrong.

Remove the front spring, loosen the front of the crossmember and lower the rear of the crossmember. This will allow you to get the oil pan out.
