Re: Steering Column Locked (Flyhigh12)
Mine finally did the same after 4yrs and 73K miles. I already had the Corvette Concepts C5 Column Lock Bypass unit but had never installed. I kept thinking well, if the column locks I'll just put the bypass in. WRONG! :nono: The little bypass electronic unit in the kit does nothing more than ensure you get no codes and/or fuel shutdown.(You get fuel shutoff when you turn the key on if you just attempt to unplug the column lock connector) It's the application of 12 volts to the two proper pins on the column lock connector that makes the column lock retract the locking pin. That's the real key (and also the first step that MUST be accomplished) After several attempts, the column lock unit finally responded as per the instructions enclosed, and unlocked. If you can't get the column lock to retract the locking pin first, then your only other alternative is to disassemble enough of the steering column assembly to get to the locking assembly.
After the lock pin retracted, I then installed the small electronic unit to the original cable(it has an OEM style plug and plugs right in)as per instructions. No problems since. Hope that helps.
I can appreciate the fact that many of you are disgruntled by the problems with your column locks, however I was looking at that linked site and busted out laughing while reading it.
It's not possible for the column to lock while you are driving the car causing a crash.
Those guys were probably drunk and looking for a way to blame their crash on the car.
Perhaps if you shut the car off at 60 mph and pulled the key out, sure it could lock up then.
The BCM has to see the ignition turn off, then the key be removed before it will lock the column.
The problem is when you are out and you come back to your car, it won't move because the column is locked, the car won't go over 10mph with the column locked. Reporters beleive anything you tell them and misconstrue everything and then print it as fact.
