HyperTech for 2001 won't program for 3.42 gear. What do you do.
My friend bought a 3.42 for his 2001 A4 and an new HP III and it wouldn't even recoginze the 3.42. Is there a work around or has HP left this gear out? :flag

You and RAT are both correct. You don't have to program a stick but you do have to program an automatic. According to my friend the 3.42 option never showed up. He has a 2001 and that HP was released just recently.

the Hypertech does proper gear scaling... for F bodies only. The C5 uses two different sensors for A4 equipped Vettes. The VSS in the rear diff for speedometer (this is also on the 6 speed C5 as well), and a second speed sensor in the A4 tranny that give data to the PCM.
The Hypertech (at least a year ago) did not re-configure the A4 tranny sensor numbers and this is why it doesn't (didn't) work on the C5 automatic very well.
It's the A4 tranny speed sensor that measures the "slip" of the tranny & torque converter; and this data is what's responsible for throwing the
"slip-code" most people get with an A4 rear axle ratio upgrade.
Like mentioned above, the Predator and LS1Edit both can handle the uniqueness(sp) of the C5's A4 layout.

Mike, I read your post about the 3.42 Carrier swap you did on your car. Did you get a slip code? I have an 02 A4 with 3.15's and am thinking about doing a 3.42 swap as you did, keeping the stock torque converter. I don't want to buy an LS1 Edit if I don't have to.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. From you info I assume the trans change somewhat in 2001 and that HP did not address the trans mod. I have a 98 and it worked well for me.
I will pass the info on regarding the Perdator and the LS1 Edit.

"Mike, I read your post about the 3.42 Carrier swap you did on your car. Did you get a slip code?"
No; but it may be year specific. In 2001, the PCM software got a major re-write and it seems to tolerate a rear axle ratio change of 10% or less. The 3.15 to 3.42 upgrade is 8.6 percent. This may be the only axle ratio change ('01 or newer) that can avoid reprogramming (when going from a factory 3.15 to the 3.42 and retaining the stock TC).
Any change from a factory 2.73 is too great and will pop the slip code.
I've drivebn about 3k miles after my no-reprog 3.15 to 3.42 upgrade and had zero problems... not even a burp out of the PCM.
Now; I have purchased the Predator to fine tune a few parameters. Although I apparently didn't need the Predator , I wanted to change the rev limiter, stiffen up the shifts, and I will be eventtually going to a 178 degree thermostat requiring the changing of the fan on/off temps.

That is what I wanted to hear. I also have a 98 and am banking on my Hypertech to flash the 3.42. If it doesn't, I will put up with the slip code until I get LS1 Edit (coming soon). :yesnod:
