[QUOTE]Unless you have prior experience with setting up gears yourself, its best to leave this to a professional. There is nothing more annoying than driving a car that has a lot of gear noise because they weren't set up correctly.
or you can just buy a new Getrag 3.42 carrier complete. You can get them brand new for around $900; If your Vette already had the 3.15 you could sell it for at least $400.
Sorry, Mike, for my ignorance, but what exactly is a "Getrag"?
And who can I buy one from for around $900.?
Thanks
something that all of us have missed on this thread is if the originators Vette has the 2.73.... it isn't upgradeable anyways. The case on the 2.73 is different than all the other ratios. There isn't enough room in the 2.73 carriers case to swap in different gears. Even the 3.15 gear set won't fit in the 2.73 case :(
Getrag is the manufacturer of the rear carrier assemblies. They are the sole supplier to GM for new-complete C5 carriers.
Since your car has the 2.73, you will have to buy a new carrier assembly (not just the gear set). I bought mine from Shawn @ LAPD. He and other CF vendors can sell this unit.

Mike, thanks for the info. I had been researching this same issue and also was of the understanding that the carrier was different for the 3.42. That is why I had inquired about the entire assembly. Hence my question, is the carrier with the 3.42 a straight swap for the carrier with the 2.73? Also, in your opinion, what kind of dollars am I looking at now?

yes

you know; it all depends on the sales and what part of the country you reside in.
I purchased a brand new 3.42 from LAPD for $980 shipped. My local dealer was willing to do the swap for $380 plus fluids.
Problem is the dealer couldn't do any programming (back then I was convinced I would need a program change... but the circumstances went in my favor and it turns out I didn't need to reprog -WHEW-).
The dealers program device - the GM Tech Tool 2 - won't allow variance beyond what was available originally from the factory. They could do a 2.73 to a 3.15 reprog, but not the 3.42 or higher since these were never available on a new A4 C5 in the first place.
mike, are you still happy with the 3.42 and stock TC? I am not sure if 3.42 will be enough of a diff for the money. If you had it to do again and had Predator (I do) would you do 3.42 or 3.73?
I checked with the local dealer and they said they would install the 3.42 for $540.00 and the cost for the Z06 diff was $1170.00, I asked if it would void anything and he (the service manager) said not as long as I don't put a chip in it :nono: ( ) The work and part would be covered for 12,000 - 12 months. Sure it cost a little more but it is nice to know that if there is a leak (like AZGASER has after the change out) I can take it back and get it fixed for free. :) This of course would be with the stock TC and the 3.42 not 3.73. I told him that members had reported that no progamming is needed from 3.15 to 3.42. :)
The "O" ring must be transfered from the A4 rear gear to the new 3.42
I would get a new from the dealer
I didn't hear it mentioned ,and it is a must ?
if you're talking about the "seal plate" (which has an O ring)... then you are correct. It must be either transferred over, or a new one installed. I re-used my seal plate since my '02 only had about 3k miles on it.
here are the part numbers for the seal plate and it's two seals:
I just drove ToplessTexan's car last week and    it was
d$#@ fast! I now know for sure that I will put in the 3.73 gears. We drove around a little and the rpm's were just fine. ;) I am not sure about the TC, the Sy3500 was very strong, but for day to day maybe a sy3000 would fit me better. I will have to look to see if anyone is running this combo. Maybe even the PT2400 might do the trick. :) I might even stay stock on the TC.
One down , one to go. :)
