I am aware that the ls6 block is now used on the c5 ls1 in the coupe and convertible. What year did this begin and is there a way to identify the block by markings?
I heard the late production run for 2001. I have heard something about a bulls-eye marking in the front of the passenger side of the block. I don't know if the mark means you have LS6 or not.
A small percentage of the F-bodies from 01 and 02 have the ls6 block also.
They way you tell is by checking the number on the back of the block. It is just above the transmission flange. I have the number of the ls6 block at my house, will post the number tomorrow.
I have wanted to check mine. But the back of the block is pretty hard to get at. So I have not had time to break out the mirror and flashlight yet.
chucschramm, if you have an ls6 block you will not have and ls6 motor because the heads are still ls1. You just have a better block and better intake.

Re: LS6 block in LS1 c5's
The following text was taken from the Engine/Performance->LS6 section of GM's Corvette Site
THE LS6. 405-HORSEPOWER.
Taking Corvette to extreme levels is something of a tradition and the LS1 V8 engine in Corvette makes a world-class foundation for the LS6 V8 engine in the Z06.
The LS6 is, more than anything, robust. Compared with the LS1, the LS6 aluminum block, cylinder heads, camshaft and induction systems are revised for better breathing at high rpm. A positive crankcase ventilation system improves oil control during racetrack and high-lateral-acceleration maneuvers. Plus, a unique-to-Z06 titanium exhaust system (mufflers and tailpipes) has less mass and more strength than aluminum or magnesium.
The zo6 advertisement you quoted was prior to the production run in 2002. As of 2002 GM gives the same part number for the ls6 and ls1 engine blocks. The blocks are now the same. I know for a fact that all new vettes from 2002 on have it, but half of the 2001's were made with it. I have found that my 2001, bought as a leftover, is an ls6 block.
you could search on LS1.com for how to tell also. There are other ways to tell than just the number on the back, something about a stamp on the front of the block also. Do a search for it.

The advertisement I quoted is the current text on GM's WWW site. I have a parts CD that covers 97-2001 and it shows different parts for the blocks. Even though my parts CD is labeled as a 2002 CD is does not have the details for the 2002 motors.
Where are you getting your information from? If you have an updated parts list can you please post a screen shot showing the two blocks are the same.
Pace--gm parts dealer--ls1/6 block part number: 12561168. I wanted to know because I was going to do the ls6 pcv modification in which the ls1 block needs to have part of the block cut away. Upon pulling the knock sensor cover--surprise, the block didn't need to be cut as it is an ls6 block.
I called pace and they said the blocks are one and the same. 2001's and up have the improved bay to bay breathing. They don't make 2 engine blocks for the same reason that they don't make 2 intake manifolds. Sorry if it bothers ZO6 owners but I also happen to have a removable roof and nicer seats.
Just to add fuel to the fire, I will add that I have a March, 2001 built LS1 engine. It has the LS6 block, there is a curved milling cut at the front right of the block "pad" area. This identifing mark been pictured many times on this forum. I have seen a post of the LS6 block On LS1 cars as far backas the Sept, 2001 built cars.
While my shortblock was out for the re-ring, I tried to upgrade to as many LS6 parts as possible. The only part that I could find that was different was the pistons! Which in the early 2001 model year were made of a better grade of aluminum for the Z06. Of course the cam is different, but I upgraded to a slightly hotter cam over Z06 stock anyway.
Basically, the only difference I can see between late 2001 LS1 longblock and Z06 longblock are the pistons, cam, complete head assembly and PCV system.
Why did you have to go do that? Now he will cry knowing that for the extra 5-7k he dropped for a car with a fixed roof could have gotten him a H/C car and a removable roof. :nonod:  :nopity
...............i do hope you are joking or at least talking about ls6 swaps into a convertable/removable top c5 :skep: ........................
in fact i am assuming you are because of the fact you are a vendor
if for some reason you are not, and you are making a genuine comment, then i am sorry. just as a FYI the Z06 comes in coupe form only with no removable top or convertable top available. i own a c3 and i know this
No i am not joking, Their is a shop in central Fla. as well as other places that is taking ZO6's and making convertibles. The tops come of rather easily, the rear tubs are the same so you don't change them structurally. I owned one for a while and you can not tell they didn't come from the factory as convertibles.
