I picked up everything to build my shortblock about 30 minutes ago. I am going to start tomorrow afternoon when I get off of work. If you have built a shortblock and have any tips or things you learned your input is welcome. Maybe this can help others in the future...

Re: Short Block Assembly....do you have any input? (Phil97SVT)
You want to completely clean everything with warm soapy water and completely dry everything, I don't have any clearance or torque specs with me but you should be able to find them here on the forum somplace, and as far as the wrist pins go I believe they are press fit and you'll have to take them to a machine shop to install the pistons on the rods

.0045" per 1 inch of bore on the ring gap. Always put a middle ring on one piston to push the other rings into their respective bores to keep them sqaure to the bore. Have the pins and pistons pin fit to reduce the drag of a pressed pin. Usually all rings have a mark of some sort and that mark goes up, sometimes they are extremely hard to see also. DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL ON THE BEARING SURFACES FOR FINAL ASSEMBLY, USE ASSEMBLY LUBE.

Topics:
1) Cleaning Block
Hot, soapy water, use bottle brushes to scrub the galleys. Rinse and oil the cyliders.
2) Clearance for Bearings
.0022 - .0025 mains and rods
3) Ring Installation
.0045 per inch of bore is very good advice - as well as squaring the rings up to the bore
4) Wrist pin Installation
Are these using a sprial lock or press fit?
5) Crank Installation
Set the end play properly and to spec - it's very little / check reluctor wheel run out <.008
6) Piston Installation/Bore preperation
Before assembly clean bores with 10 weight oil to remove any left over debris from honing that the soapy water tends to miss. Use a premium ring compressor.
7) Torque specs
Follow the manual or spec sheets if using aftermarket bolts. Use moly or assembly lube and if possible, use only studs and not the TTY bolts.
8) covers and gaskets
Factory GM stuff is great
Other notes:
1)watch out to install the oil relief plugs properly (cap in front and the "blue plug" in the rear of the block.
2) Use thread lock or loctite, especially on cam plates, bolts, etc.
3) degree the cam
4) Shim the oil pump spring a minmum of .100 and polish the relief bore and pluger to avoid "sticking"
5) watch out that you use a new or very "like new" oring on the oil pump pickup tube
6)prior to firing up the new motor spin it over with plugs out to prime the system and fill the lifter
