Ok, I'm still getting used to my new C5. Today has been the warmest day yet, 80-83 degrees outside. I'm sitting in traffic and watching the temp gauge. It climbs to 227 at it's highest, and never below 220 until I get moving steadily. Should I get a 180 degree stat? Is this the normal range for hot weather driving? Also, I was watching the volt meter and it's charging anywhere from 12.9-13.2 volts. Most cars that I have owned are usually up around 13.8-13.9. I suppose as long as its above 12.0 it should be charging. Also, oil pressure drops to ~22psi on these hot days while idling hot, goes up to ~40 when under accel or cruising. Sorry so long, just trying to get to know my new baby.
Bill - These all sound "normal" to me. I have the same experience while sitting in traffic. Changing to a 180 degree thermostat will not help. The most common remedy is lowering the PCM programmed set point for fan turn on. I have seen no explanation why the factory setting for the fans is so high.
Alan
Yes this is normal for temps, your stage one cooling fan comes on somewhere around 229 & off at 220, Your 2nd stage fans come on & off about 10* higher then the 1st stage. If you want your car to run cooler then you will need to change these on off fan settings, there's several ways you can do that. :)

The engine runs hotter to help reduce emissions when the car is at idle. :seeya
Thanks for all the replys. I don't know why I didn't think of water wetter, I run it in the Mustang and 4-runner. What ways are there to change the fan on temp? A custom chip or other device?
Your oil pressure is fine. Actually I believe the book thinks 6pds is ok at idle (gasp) I think they wanted 40psi at 4K. The old 10 psi for every 1000rpm is ok for older conventional oil engines but the newer stuff is fine at 40psi. Anything more is just wasted HP.
Hey CAPN17, I am trying to choose between purchasing the LS1 edit and Diablo Predator. Do you have any thoughts? Have you ever used Ls1 edit?
No I have not used the LS1 edit, from the research I did and from what I read on the forum the following was evident. The LS1 runs on a computer, for ease of use a laptop. The laptop I have is my kids old one and the processor is antiquated. I do not need a new laptop and do not want to invest in one. The LS1 edit is very powerful and capable of doing some really advanced work that I do not want to get into at this stage of my Z06 experience, I will leave that work to the pros. I wanted someting quick and easy to use, someting that let me do the basics, something that would not confuse this poor old man. After doing a bit of research on the Available products, I found the Diablo Predator to fill the bill and that James, RWTD, the local predator sales and service, who hangs around on the board fit my requirements. James is quick to respond to phone or email requests for help, he called me while he was on vacation to answer my questions. James does the custom edits as necessary and the predator does what I need and more. Hope that answers your question I chose predator.
Hard to believe but if you run the a/c the engine runs cooler - because the fan is on. I have turned mine on in traffic, then off on the open road - top or no top. I think the battery condition determines the charging voltage - your battery must be in good shape. Enjoy your car!
