Default Need track application cam advice

I imagine lots of people have this same question. I have progressively gone from a (stock LS6 engine) 6-speed T1 track car to a more dedicated track car, though I still drive it on the street. I am not a drag racer. Mr. Mallett has helped me a lot with the suspension and the ported heads/valve train, which are I guess what some people would call "stage II" with dual valve springs, ti retainers, etc. So I am ready for a bigger cam than the 2002 stock LS6 cam, the specs of which I understand from posts on this forum to be 204/218 degrees duration, .551/.547 lift, and a lobe separation interval of either 114 or 115 (not sure).

With all the hype lately about the LGM cam "specials," I have become interested in LGM cams - not the new super-big G5X2 cam, but either the G2 or the original G5. While I would like more power, I am not interested in bragging rights about peak hp. I definitely want a fat torque band for my application, and I do not want a cam with so agressive a ramp that it breaks my engine - I run at high rpms 30 minutes at a time, not for 11 seconds a time.

My tuner raised potential problems with the G5 cam, which I understand is a split timing cam with something around a 224/230, .585/.570, 112 LSA grind. He warned me that the abrupt ramp angles might give me a durability problem at sustained high RPMs.

While the lift isn't that much more than the LS6 cam, his warning about the ramp angles made sense to me, so I am worrying about it. So I have also looked at the LGM G2 cam, which I also understand to be a 224/224, .580/.580 grind, but with a choice between a 112 and 114 LSA. I also considered the GMPP "Hot Cam," which I understand to be 218/227, .525/.525, 112. This one initially didn't make much sense to me since while the timing is more radical, the lift is less than the stock LS6. (But maybe for extended high rpm performance there is an advantage to this???

I know this is a subject for a textbook, but I am trying to puzzle this out. Can those who have solid track experience with these or similar cams help me out with this? Please remember I am not looking either to drag race or look for the "best" dyno chart. I'm looking for reliable power for extended sessions at 4000-6000 rpm. Many thanks, Robert

If you lean toward LG there is no better expert than Lou on the track. I would tell him what you want and let him tell you what you need.

I have no doubt about this. I was just hoping to hear from folks who had experience in using them, as opposed to those who are selling them. I started to say that I would like to get it right the first time, but of course this will be my fourth cam in this car (stock LS1, stock 2001 LS6, stock 2002 LS6, and now hopefully the last one for a while). I would like to get it right this time (you don't want to know what I have invested in this car).

I lost the spec's for my cam but so far so good. Lift was 613 I beleive. Call Denny at the Vette Doctors. It may be in the old computer if I find it I'll let you know.
