I had done my H/C change some time ago and had no problems. After several months I pulled my heads to try a raised compression ratio with a thinner head gasket. After two weeks the car developed a pinging problem at the upper rpms and then over the course of 3 days or so, it moved lower. It seemed to coincide with WOT.
I tried the usual fixes for pinging.....decarb process for the top end, timing changes, A/F changes and couldn't narrow it down. Finally on the fourth day the car wouldn't even start. WTF???!!! I decided there must be something that I had overlooked. Thinking that there is a common issue with starting your car if the groud wire to the back of the driver's side head if it is not tightened, I checked it.
Guees what......loose wire. Upon proper tightening, the car started. A test drive with my original programing had no sign of pinging. The ignition system was cutting out giving the syptoms (especially the sounds) of pinging.
Always double check that ground. :skep:
Re: Pinging problem solved: take note (SpinMonster)
yes, vey important grounding point and a bastage to get to. In fact, every ground in the car is vital on these C5's. Make no compromises with ground on this car as it is badly grounded.

What really disturbes me RWJ, is that I had made it a point to tighten that during my head install because I am aware of how hard it is to get to.
Take care and nice car u have there!
