Help my car sounds like crap when it first is turned on it squeeks like crazy. Eventually this goes away. It is RPM dependent so this leaves me to believe it is one of the engine accessories. Anyway, I searched the knowledgebase and found this http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=563531 and think this might be the culprit. I tried to "listen" to that particular idler but it is too far down to get a listener device onto.
Eric, I have been going through this with our Y2K vert. The problem was mostly corrected when they put "matching parts" on the car. :banghead: By matching parts, they are all the new style, this includes the new style Main belt, tensioner and idler pulley. Another dealer had been changing one piece at a time and had not put the "matching" stuff in at the same time. :skep: The second dealer I went to did that had it is greatly improved. The only thing we have now is a slight chirp that I believe is caused by the lettering on the new belt. I am going to clean it off and see if that helps.
My 1999 C5 coupe made the same noise. The dealer replaced the idler pulley according to a TSB, which eliminated the noise. (It is the pulley under the alternator, not the other one.)
The labor allowed by the bulletin is 0.6 hours and the part is inexpensive. The dealer mechanic told me it is much easier to access the idler pulley from underneath.
Even my brand-new '03 chirps and makes all kinds of weird noises :mad; go figure.
All of my previous V8s just purred, even the ones on my trucks. This thing seems to make noise from the lifters, accessories, belt tensioner, fuel injectors... everywhere. They're not worrysome noises, and I know dealers won't even know where to start, so I'll live with them, but it SUCKS.
Yup, I posted "freakin' squeakin' '98" a couple of weeks ago. I also replaced tensioners, pulley's and belts (at Chevy Dealer) to no avail. I've ordered a Goodyear Gatorback belt based on responses I got. For me it is the belt.
I now crank up the 'Vette in a closed garage open the hood and squirt WD40 on the innner and outer of the belt until the squeek subsides. I refuse to be heard in public in a freakin' squeakin' "Vette!!! Hope that Gatorback gets in today! :mad
I have a 99 FRC that is squealing more than squeaking. but not all the time. In 5th gear at 45mph it is very steady and loud only when you step on the gas let off the gas and it's gone. You can hear it over my strait pipes  I replaced the Idler pulley $15 15 min job and now have the Gattorback belt but it's still there. It's on the drivers side and very faint at idle. I'm leaning towards the power steering pump now  It got worse with the new belt . The new belt grips more so it's not sliding over the pump pulley while its freezing up I think :skep: The WD40 just lets the belt slip so no squeak???
I went through all of this for 2 months last year. Change the tensioner 2 times the idler pulley twice, five different brands of new belts, the new and improved alternator, and it turned out to be the harmonic balancer/pulley. Have the dealer check the runout....it doesn't take alot of wobble to make the chirping sound. When they replace it be sure that they order a new bolt at the same time. I haven't had any sounds since!
My '00 FRC started squeaking at 35k miles. It was rpm dependent (higher pitch and more squeak at higher revs).
This didn't work (made things worse):
1. Belt dressing--2 brands tried, it just made a mess and caused more squeaking
These things worked:
1. Cleaned the belt dressing off while car was running (very carefully) with
a very small piece of cloth to minimize risk of snagging, and soaked with Fantastik(tm), the green kitchen counter grease cutting cleaning spray. That made the squeak go away for about two weeks and 400 miles.
2. Rubbed a bar of soap on the belt (both sides) while the car was running (very carefully). Believe it or not, the squeaking went completely away. The belt had a nice "haze" from the soap. It didn't squeak for 2 months and 1500 miles under all conditions.
This worked permanently (or at least until next belt change):
1. Had Vandergriff Chevy in Arlington TX install a new OEM belt. I dropped in at lunch, took them 1 hr while I waited and ate lunch. No squeaks, happy camper.
I know this won't work for everyone since some cars have squeaky pulleys, etc. I just figured to try the belt first.
