However I believe the C5 has a different setup in terms of the CV boot/lubricant around the joint. I really would love to find some step by step documentation on the C5 process as I am really needing to replace my drivers side ASAP before it gets any worse. I'm getting a pretty rough clicking/clunking/tapping sound now and I don't want to make things worse; hopefully I can just change the boot/seals/grease; can this be done w/o removing the shaft? I did notice when installing my Borla exhaust that there was a sizeable amount of greasy goo all around and in that side of the wheel well, I'm sure the boot is damaged and leaking grease. The question is whether or not the joint is bad :(
I'm pretty handy w/ a tool I just need someone to guide me if possible; this is new uncharted ground w/ this car for me ;)
On a side note, are there any parts that I should replace w/ better/stronger aftermarket ones during the process? Thanks, and please help your fellow vetter get back on the road
Not sure if this does much for you but I replaced the rear carrier this weekend and of course to do that had both rear axles out of the car, although still connected at the wheel. WOuld have been very easy to change at that point.
I would pick up a used set of service manuals or there is a website where you can order them cheap/used. Got mine for $65.
If you are hearing a clicking or thumping from the CV joint it is already too late to just replace the boot and lubricant. You would just be wasting time and money. Try to locate a rebuilt halfshaft from a reputable source and just swap out the entire assembly, you will be time and $ ahead in the long run. As new as the C5's are you might not be able to find one on the aftermarket yet. GM will be very expensive - try wrecking yards for a nice low mileage unit.
