i've never changed an exaust system out before and wondered if i should change my current stock C-5 system out and install the performance choice exaust i purchased. The mufler shops around here tell me about $70 bucks to change it out.....
What do you think? Should i pay the bucks or do it myself? Is it hard to do? How do i do it??
Many guys have just done it themselves to save the bucks. I fortunately had it done when I did a converter install. You will have to get it up on some jack stands. I do not think you can get it high enough on stands w/o having to cut the pipes to get them over the rear end stuff. Most muffler shops love to work on the new 'Vettes because most of the time they work on old rusted out rice rockets or 30 year old F100’s with 30 years of dirt and grime under them! I even had some simple welding done on a new car of mine free of charge, although it was a real easy job. I tipped the guy for the work.
I'm in the same situation in that I was contemplating doing an install myself or taking it somewhere to have it done. I decided for $75 I'll save myself some potential grief and have it done.
I was also concerned whether or not I could get the car high enough. Anyway, I'm taking the easy way out! Good Luck.
hmmm, maybe i'll try to convince a local garage to let me use their lift.....i'm gonna try to do this one on my own ....exp. if i dont have to cut stuff if i can get it high enough in the air......
I just had my stock c5 exhaust removed and a z06 exhaust installed
on my 2002 this morning. It took about 30 minutes at Rainbow Muffler
near Cleveland. Cost $40. It is a very simple procedure once the car
is in the air. It may take longer to properly align an aftermarket type.
I did mine myself in the garage and got it up high enough to get the stock system out in one piece and it was a little scary. After the install I was not satisfied with the cheesy clamps included with the exhaust and took it to a shop and had it welded instead of using the clamps which helped misalignment. This cost me $40.00 and he told me he would have done the whole install for me for about $70.00. Take it from there.
I did a swap of stock to Z06 mufflers on my 03 in my garage. Mufflers are same size, just bolt right up to pipe flanges. bought 2 new gaskets from dealer as olds most likely will tear when you seperate pipes. there are several articles that discribe the installation on the forums; i.e. https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...D=11&TopicID=1
But I would recomend taking it to a lift somewhere as a lot less stress than trying to jack car up 35" in rear. Not a hard job. Clearance a bit tight on auto cars on passenger side. 6-speed has lots of space.
