Has anyone installed a trans cooler themselves? I want to do this install, but DO NOT want to cut the return line from the radiator. If you have done it, what fittings did you use? Believe it or not, I have been trying for months to figure this out and no one (including the tech at B&M) knows how to do a C5 without cutting and flare forming. If you have a successful cooler install, please tell us about it. I know there are others that would like to know too. Thanks. :yesnod: :)
I installed a BM 24000 cooler two weeks ago, the fittings included in the
kit fit the fittings on the radiator and line (there are two different sizes supplied)
no cutting was necessary!.
Biggest problem was mounting with a coldair filter sharing space under the
shroud (tight area to work)
Pre fill cooler and lines before making final connections after mounting and running hoses.......................(takes about a pint).
Oh ya, the return line is on the top...........
good luck and have a great C5 day..................... :flag
Thanks for the response. I saw your post while doing a search. I wanted to use fittings so it could be returned to stock. I disconnected the fitting to the radiator to see what possible sizes would work. Noted that the fitting to the radiator was pretty specific. It concerned me that the wrong type fitting might hurt something, so I decided to cut the line. My cooler came with clamps and two sets of barbed fittings. I used those and it worked out fine. To put it back to stock will just require one in line connector and clamps.
That was my conclusion from the thread to which you responded.
Each tranny cooler company has a GM fitting kit (learned this AFTER I did my install, when I knew nothing). Unscrew factory line into radiator, use fitting with double flared end and slip the cooler's hose over it, clamp. On the end of the line going to the tranny, it's the same thing, male fitting with double flared pipe. The little double-flared pipe is what comes with the fitting kits.
