I have my 99 vert for about 3 weeks now.I have been going back and forth with this and can't decide.Should I put in an aftermarket alarm or not.I tried the c5 alarm upgrade and some alarms come up when the sensors are hooked up,I can't seem to get an answer why that happens.I have read some Chevy technical service bullitens were alarms can screw up the electronics and void the warranty.I also have read were some of you guys have had no problems at all.I can't seem to make up my mind.Maybe you guys can push me in the right direction.
Re: Point me in the right direction..... (540 vette)
I've never been a big fan of alarms, but I don't usually have to put the car in high risk spots much.
When I do, like an over night hotel stay, I will disable the car by unplugging the coil banks. I know this won't work an a regular basis but maybe a battery cut off switch like that are used on race cars.
Since you can't really cut off the battery power to the car you would have to just cut off the power to the starter.
Now that my car is very modded, and has a deep exhaust note, it sets off car alarms when I drive through parking garages. No one evers checks on the cars and in minutes they stop.
I know this probably doesn't help your decision but I thought I would offer up an alternative to just an alarm.

38 years as a police officer, I would say forget the alarm, they only keep honest people out. If a thief wants your car it will be his no matter what alarm, cut off, cut out, club, transmission lock or other device you add to the car. Face facts in the real world nothing you do short of spending your life in the drivers seat is going to protect the car. We buy insurance because this is a reality, lock it up and pray it is there when you return, there just are no givens in life.
