Default TR ported oil pump question

I am about to do a H/C job on my '98. I ordered a thunder racing ported oil pump to replace the stock unit since I will be in there anyways. I have read a few recent posts here and on another forum from people who have installed ported pumps and report low oil pressure. It seems the concensus is that the low oil pressure is a result of a torn o-ring on the oil pump tube and it is not a pump problem. Can someone verify this? Is the low oil pressure caused by an install problem? Is it better going with a new stock unit?

Thanks

When I (re)did the heads/cam job on my 99, I went with a ported/polished LS6 oil pump from ARE on my car. Definitely get a new rubber O-ring from your local dealer, as it's a $3 part that will make or break the install. A torn ring will definitely affect the oil pressure you see.

Lube the ring up w/ fresh oil before you install it and be careful not to tear it. When you slide it over the nozzle of the pickup tube and then push it up into the pump, you'll 'feel' it make a 'pop' as it settles into place, so don't be worried there.

Check out this site for a good walk-though on the pump replacement: http://www.ls1howto.com

Yeah, my site should walk you through the tricky part of the install. Be gentle with the o-ring, put it on the male part rather than the female part and slide it in (erm..). Should be good to go.

I tore my o-ring on my 4th or 5th oil pump install...I guess I just got sloppy. Seeing 10psi of pressure the first time I fired my heads/cam car really disappointed me, but a few hours later I had the new o-ring in and it's been fine since. If you have high miles, it may be good to just put a new o-ring on anyway.

Also, the TR pump comes from katech and it will not give you higher pressure than the stock one, its more just a blueprinted unit that hopefully has less of a chance of failure than a straight oem one.

Thank you for the help. I have 3 o-rings on deck, as I hear they tear easily. I will be extra careful on the install of the o-ring as I would hate to have to disassemble everything right after I get it all back together.

jmX -- your site is excellent, it gave me the confidence to do the H/C install myself. Also, your writeup on the Yella Terra install answered the questions I was about to post on preload. Great work.

Jeff Jeff, good to hear. The more money we can save by doing labor ourselves, the more parts we can buy! :D Glad I could help out.
