For the past 2 weeks or so my 98 has had a squeak coming from one of the pulleys up front(drive belt area). I haven't had time to investigate which one is the culprit yet, but I was wondering if there was one that may be more common than the others to cause a squeak. It only makes the noise from idle to maybe 1300 rpms. Above that it's quiet. Any suggestions. :smash:
Re: Sqeak from serpentine belt area?? (LPDesRoche)
I just replaced my main belt, cost me about 50 bucks. A couple of friends have had sqeeky belts as well, so it must be pretty common. We call it the corvette cricket. :jester
Re: Sqeak from serpentine belt area?? (LPDesRoche)
There is a tensioner pully and an idler pully on the serpentine belt and most likely it is one or both of these that are making the noise. I just replaced both of these on my C5 after about 39000 miles and all squeaking noises are gone. :D

LPDesRoche,
I had a similar squeak on my 1999 C5 coupe. Based upon a TSB for 1997 - 1999 C5's with the LS1 engine, the dealer replaced the idler pulley (the one under the alternator - there are two) and it eliminated the squeak. The squeak on mine was also audible at idle and "disappeared" at higher RPM's. The TSB allows 0.6 hours labor time and the pulley is not very expensive. The dealer/mechanic said it was easier to access the pulley from underneath the car. Good luck.

Going through the same thing you are right now. Part number 12564401 is the squeaky idler pulley that gets replaced under warranty (if you have it). I got the part for under $31 from Fichtner online, and will install it myself.

Of the two belts, it is usually the air conditioner belt. Since you have to take off the larger belt to get to the A/C belt, you might as well do both at the same time. Have changed belts at 205K and 283K on my '99. :auto:
