Default Spark plug wires...is bigger always better.

I am seeing all these different aftermarket wires and most of them are around 8 to 9mm wires...there was a thread here that pointed to the Taylor Thundervolt wires...here's what they show:

ThunderVolt Wires
The Ultimate Performance Wire features a ferrite spiral wound coated core blended of an exclusive copper/nickel allow bonded by a conductive acrylic latex cover. This exclusive process is designed to reinforce the tensile properties of the core and to assist in holding the core resistance to 50 ohms per foot (+/- 20%) under most racing conditions.

-The Ultimate Performance Wire with only 50 Ohms of resistance per foot!
-10.4 mm wire = .409 inch diameter
-Three layers of pure ZIMPLEX Silicone
-600 degree heat protection
-No additional Sleeving Required
-Tightly woven, heat treated fiberglass braid
-Pure silicone "Pro Boot" bonded to wire

Most other wires are around 40-50 ohms/foot. Those that have been following my detonation problem know I just replaced my plugs just recently. I have also heard that as long as the stock wires are still intact, that they are pretty good...but is there any advatage with these wires over stock ones? How are these different from the Mangacore (sp?), MSD and other brands...anybody used them yet?

IMO the stock wires are not good at all! They were causing misfires at 40K miles! Replaced with Magnecor's much better idle and no misfires! I have heard the Taylor's are also a good wire. :yesnod:

I just installed new plugs and the Taylor 10.4 mm wires and it DID make a difference. The idle is definitely better for my car.

I just replaced my OEM wires with the 8.5mn MSD's. It cured a lumpy idle my car has had sine new. At 23765 miles I sometimes have to look at the tach to be sure the car is idling. I do believe higher quality wires do transmit more electrical power to the plugs.

Here's the info on the MSD's:
The MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Wire is "the" performance wire.Engineered from the inside out, the 8.5 offers everything you have everwanted in a wire; incredibly low resistance without electronic interference! In a single 12 inch length of Super Conductor Wire there is only 40 - 50ohms of resistance! That is the lowest resistance of any helically wound wire. To accomplish this, we use a copper alloy conductor due to it's great voltage carrying capabilities. This conductor is wound extremely tight around a special center core. So tight in fact, that there is over 40 feet of conductor wrapped into a single foot of plug wire. This winding procedure, combined with a ferro-magnetic impregnated center core, produces an extremely effective Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) "choke". This choke, or suppression capability, keeps the EMI inside the wire where it cannot interfere with other electronics on your vehicle. The EMI suppression capability of the 8.5mm wire is equal to a 1,500 ohm per foot wire except you can get 30 times more spark energy delivered to the plug! The outer sleeve that surrounds the conductor assembly is just as impressive. A proprietary blend of silicone and synthetic material produce a sleeve that is highly resistant to high heat as well as abrasion and tears. The MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Plug Wire is available in Universal Kits and Bulk Lengths.

Cost $79

Tom

MSD spark plug wires. I have them on mine vette. After installing NGK TR55 spark plugs & MSD spark plug wires I noticed my vette ran very smooth and responsive. Here is the web site....only $50.95for the wires.

Vendor: MSD Ignition
Product Line: MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Wire Sets
Material: Silicone
Finish: Red

Superior conductivity wires from MSD.

Chevrolet: 1998-2000 LS-1 Camaro, Corvette, Super Conductor wire set

MSD's 8.5 mm Super Conductor Wire has a special helically-wound core that has just 40-50 ohms of resistance per foot--but with the RFI suppression equal to a 1,500 ohm wire. In fact, each foot of finished wire features 40 ft. of tightly wound copper for superior conductivity. A tough 8.5 mm synthetic/silicone jacket over an extra heavy glass braid and dielectric insulator keeps the current guided to the plugs. Underneath the high-temperature boots, stainless steel terminals feature snap locks to assure a secure fit.

Nope, I've had them for over a year.

"The EMI suppression capability of the 8.5mm wire is equal to a 1,500 ohm per foot wire except you can get 30 times more spark energy delivered to the plug! "

But only if your coil can produce 30 times as much energy!

BTW I am NOT dissing these wires, its just that in typical applications (like lightly modded corvettes) the wires are not a BIG detriment to the production of power.
