Thanks for the info. It basically jives with what I was thinking.
Maybe I should see if my father will swap his MN6 for my MN12 - then I can put in a 3.90 or 4.10 differential and be all set. Of course, this is probably a crapload of work for not too much gain. I'll probably just concentrate on horsepower first.
Oh, FYI, I hold 3rd until at least redline and the Viper was an '02 with a Hennessey 500 package (basically just intake and exhaust from what I understand).

Bleck, this may sound like a really stupid question, but if I hadn't done it already about five times myself I wouldn't ask...
Were you in competition mode or your system completely off...? B/C if it is on, it will engage on quick lift shifts very abruptly on gear changes...
Also, you are dealing with a car with 100 +/- hp than you (and only 300+/- lbs heavier)-more than likely he's going to pull you upstairs.
And to the guys looking at lower gears...? Be wary. Traction becomes a major issue when you go to lower gears (the LS1 275mm rears are too small, and the Z06 295mm rears gets "reduced" slightly by the factory allignment calling for negative camber [which is good on the racetrack]).
My Pilot 335's (really a 320mm) on 11.5's grab like crazy with my LS1 with factory gearing modded to an estimated 400+/- flywheel hp. I feel they would wtill grab up to a 3.73-3.90, but thereafter I fear 1st would become useless. And adding big HP would only make things worse...
Choose wisely!!
With a soon to be H/C 500 FWHP I still feel they will slip & grab.

This was a long time ago - but I probably had traction control on. However, that wasn't an issue. I had just bought the car and wasn't too comfortable with the B&M Ripper yet - so my shifts weren't all that fast. Plus, I don't think I could break the tires loose on the 3-4 with anything short of powershifting on that road surface (fairly new concrete). And I love my car too much to powershift - even though others have done it a lot without damage.
Anyway - I didn't lose much on the shift, but afterward he slowly pulled away and put about 1-2 car lengths between us by 130 when we shut it down. I attribute it to his additional 100 hp - but I think I would have done better with a fourth gear that tops out at 130 instead of 145. I always found the gear selection for the MN12 a bit odd.

Mine does it in third and fourth with the 335's-I should have stated that you don't need to break the tires just sometimes unsettle the suspension-but you said that wasn't it.
The bigger problem with fourth would be shifteing into 5th, even with a shorter fourth. Fifth is an overdrive gear, and it's like hitting a wall unless you have a tone of power and torque.
This is why 'vettes rock to 140+ (1-4), and take forever to reach 170 (5th). A more serious 5th gear would be .85-.80, but it would kill top speed.
REVISION: OOPS, the MN12 is .84 compare to .74 in the MN6
Anyway, I agree with you on the powershifting! I won't do it in this car.

Am I understanding this right that we have two choices to make better use of available horsepower. One is two change the rear end diff from 3.42 to 3.90 or 4.10's. The other is to replace the M6 tranny with the M12 giving the approximate effect of a 3.90 gear change.
If so how much more expensive is the tranny change than the rear gears?

Just finished the installation of this bad boy (replaced my MN6).
Pick up (seat of the pants) in first and second is awesome over the MN6.
What a RUSH :yesnod:

How much does the MN12 cost?
