My friend is trying to talk me into installing nitrous on my 2003 vert 6SPD, because of the relatively low cost and impressive gains. What are the downsides to this approach??

It certainly will add additional stress to critical engine and drivetrain components. I wouldn't do it to my car when it is still under warranty for sure (it will void your warranty if detected.) But that's just me. Others here will disagree I'm sure.
there are benefits to doing juice, lots of power for little money. It is not very forgiving though. One n2O backfire and it will cost big $. My last one cost 3k.
New hood + intake+ manifold + other crap.
Are you sure this guy is your friend  Seriously I would not put nitrous on a new car that is still under warranty.
Yes, he is a friend. He bought a 2003 Z06 a few months before me. He has been pretty happy about the power/speed differential until I picked up 27RWHP from Halltech/160therm/LS1Edit. Now I can keep up with him at least (not beat him but I'm working on it) due to the different gearing I imagine -- and the different driving styles. So, I think he is starting to shop for N2O for his car and is trying to sell the idea to me (possibly to legitimize it in his own mind...). :blueangel:
Thanks for the advice. I feel the same way. Something about it just feels 'dirty' -- like cheating or something. It reminds me of high school when everyone had Mustangs :U and couldn't afford the engine mods...
Re: What are the downsides to nitrous? (dmcantrell)
I have the nitrous with all the safety equipment and a 50 shot, it works great, no problems and with a 50 shot IM not worried at all, BUT I would save your money for a magnuson supercharger, filling the bottle gets real old fast IMHO

A dry kit like the 5177 is relatively safe at lower levels , no more then 100hp shot. I know many users that have run dozens of bottles thru their cars with no ill effects. Like many here , I wouldn't do it on a warrantied car.It is like any other mod, the more radical you go, the less reliable your car becomes.
