Default Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 Active Handling?

I've recently sold my moderately modified Toyota Supra Twin Turbo (upgraded turbo setup, making roughly 500rwhp) in favor of of a c5/z06. I have yet to decide exactly which c5 I'm going to buy (98 c5 vs frc vs z06). Needless to say, if money were not an issue, I'd shoot directly for a '03 z06, but I'd like to leave a decent budget for upgrades. I've done tons of research, but there seems to be very limited documented information in regard to the active handling systems. To clarify, I am really only inquiring in regard to how the systems behave once they are both in competition mode around hard corners. (already know about which cars they came standard on, which optional, how they sytems switch from normal to competition mode, etc) If some folks would please chime in on their experiences, I would be very greatful. I would be especially greatful if someone has pushed both versions to the limits aorund corners and can share their thoughts.

First, welcome to the Forum, and the land of the Vette

Personaly, I like the Active Handeling, having C5's with, and without same.

I am sure that others will chime in on this question.

from idavette

Changes include revised sideslip angle rate control, rear brake stability control, improved coordination with traction control and a change in the procedure to enable "competitive mode."

Sideslip angle control means AH2 can now sense if the driver is too slow to react or overreacting to vehicle dynamics during transient maneuvers that exceed the car’s limits. The revised Active Handling enables just the right amount of differential braking to assist in maintaining vehicle balance. AH2’s control over rear brake intervention is more precise during high lateral acceleration combined with light braking, such as a driver surprised by a decreasing radius turn. AH2’s response to that situation is more seamless and predictable. AH2 is better coordinated with traction control which uses either rear brake intervention and engine torque limiting to control rear wheel spin. Compared to AH1, the revised Active Handling’s use of traction control is skewed more towards rear brakes than engine controls. The result is less engine "sags" and better engine response after a traction control incident

Gen I works fine in comp mode. Compare I can't.

Did Gen II include ugraded hardware, or is it software only? Can Gen I be upgraded to Gen II by reprogramming the BCM?

No. I forget exactly why but it is not upgradeable. I have Gen I and it is way too intrusive in the comp mode, but still better than not having it

Thanks for all your replies!

Richin Chicago,

I was hoping you get some more clarification. With your Gen-1 AH, does it cut power for X seconds at the first sign of wheel slippage?.....can you get the rear end loose at all before it intervenes? Can you describe how exactly it is too intrusive? Thank you again for the information.
