i found some interesting differences between pep boys and auto zone ACDelco filters. the price is about the same, but the similarities stop there. i've enclosed a pic. you can click on it to enlarge it.
keep in mind the filter on the right is pep boys, on the left is auto zone.
the PB box is made in USA, (bottom right corner) the AZ box is not. the PB filter has 5 holes in the top, a welded ring, bigger holes down inside the filter along with a rubber piece i believe is the anti-drain back valve.
the AZ filter has 6 holes in the top, no welded ring, smaller holes down inside the filter and no ADBV.
i don't know if the differences are a big deal but the PB filter on the right looks like a better built filter and is made in the US of A!
i just wanted to share this info and you can draw your own conclusions.
I would like to know more about this. I worked at AZ for a few years and I can tell you this, there are only so many plants in the world that make auto parts. For example when I was there AZ sold brand new water filters that came in a yellow bag and said made in poland, NAPA sold new water pumps for double the price that came in yellow bags that were made in poland. On the other hand AZ's electronic parts are some of the best, BUT the high volume items like ford starter relays, and common chevy parts they switched to a cheaper company and returns went up. Unless you have a fake, you have to assume that AC Delco contracts different plants and the filters meet the minimum specs.
I always wondered about that also. The original filter that came off my car had a high quality red rubber gasket, vice the black. George
:flag GCubed, you've got to be in the Navy. I haven't heard the term 'vice' meaning "Instead of" in decades.

i have one in front of me its the same as the one on the right side. i get my filter from a a/c delco warehouse it say usa in the right corner also.

I'm curios, would the amount of holes in the filter really matter(4 vs.5) as I THINK the amount of oil that flows thfough the oil filter would be controled by the oil pump.Would having an extra hole in the filter make any difference? I don't know. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
Not saying you are correct, but you might be correct. All manufacturers face counterfeit production of their parts, and oil filters are one of the major counterfeited items.
I'm not saying either of these filters are counterfeit; however, if GM gave a spec, there might be allowable variances. However, a missing anti-drain back valve could cause engine damage (not on a Vette since this valve would not be required), but on any application where the filter could drain when the engine is shut off. As for the weld, if GM has a weld in their specification, and this one did not, then it would not meet spec. Then again, possibly GM said a weld was not required, but one manufacturer was set up to weld, and a weld would be better, so it would surpass the spec.
Confused? I am. It sure don't look anything like my UPF-44.
Due to this post, I compared brand-X and brand-Y with X costing $1.50 more. Inside the box, both looked identical, holes, welds etc, even the printing on the filter was exactly the same size and font. Made me wonder. Sid.
A PF 44 came with my car originally.. So I feel they ARE THE RIGHT FILTER...
I went to K mart the other day.. they had a sale on all oil filters... mostly Fram and Penski... up on the top shelf there were 6 ACDelco Filters,.. and guess what , they were PF 44.... Your post here made me go out to the gargage and check on my stash of filters.... They are Made in USA.. and they look like the Pep Boys ones you pictured... life is good.... 6 filters.. 6 dollars.. :hurray: :hurray:
