What is a magnetic drain plug? What does it do? How much does it cost? Will the Dealer put it on for me next time i change to oil? Does it have any Drawbacks?
Cost is like $4.00 no big deal. Yes the dealer will put one in the next time you change your oil.
The reason for it is to detect metal shavings and parts that might fall into the oil pan. The drain plug attracts them and you will see them next time you check the oil. The block is aluminum but there are plenty of ferrous parts in the motor. I always find a small amount of very fine metal dust on mine. some members have found larger things like needle bearings from a rocker failure. It is just peace of mind.
Your dealer has them, or can get them. Easy, cheap mod that might do some good. I have always used them and usually find some black residue when changind oil. The only down side would come if the magnet decided to part company with the plug. :bb
