I had a fix done at the dealer (tank removal and sending unit replaced) but I still periodically have the fuel guage drop from about 1/3 to zero instantaneously. When the tank is then filled the guage stays at zero for a few seconds then jumps up and reads correctly.
The last time this happend the guage was pegged at zero and the fill up took 13.8 gallons. Any ideas what is happening???? Thanks
I don't have any great fixes except to say that I took it to the dealer twice and they got it right the second time. It scared me to death the first time it happened and I was a long way from civilization. But then I just got kind of used to it and could tell from the trip meter and average mileage about how much gas I had left. Sometimes filling it up would help but not all the time. Anyway, I would take it back to the dealer again. There have been some posts here about using some additives to help, etc. but I'm not sure if they work or not.
Re: 2000 Fuel Guage Problem Drops to zero (FunDriver)
You have been visited by the famous GM gas gauge clown. He just loves to fool around with the owners by fouling up the gas gauge reading. There have been a lot of posts on this problem. There is no set solution, there are many different thoughts for the cause. It seems to happen to a lot of us. Best advice is to really watch the odometer and miles driven since last fillup. Dealer may be able to install passenger side sending unit, but that doesn't always fix. Good luck.
Had the same problem in my 2000. Dealer changed the sending unit and so far so good. I really don't let it go below 1/2 tank anymore. When it first got fixed I did and it was O. K. I've been doing what some other members have tried which is using Shell gas. Don't know if it matters but I've been doing it. I also am going to add Chevron Techron additive periodically for a preventitive method. I heard you can get it at Wal-Mart or Auto Zone.
My Y2K has done it twice......never taken it to the dealer for the problem and never will unless it gets really bad. I can live with the occasional "issue" ......afterall it is a GM
