As some of you may have read, I had my car "towed" to the dealer this morning due to my steering column locking. I just heard back from the dealer, and the part that is the problem is the "steering lock actuator" which is about a $120 part. The total parts/labor is going to run about $400+.
Can any of you who have had the steering column messed with or "fixed" by the dealer tell me a little about this...does this sound right?
I see you have a 6-speed. Then yes the steering column lock activator can fail. Guess they are replacing the entire actuator. there is a GM service bulletin on this for certain car Vin's, #01044A. 2000 MY is vin 0001 to 16233. If you can falls under this GM should pick up the tab. I would call GM cusomer service 800# and file a complaint to see if they will cover the cost, even if your car is out of the vin # range. The lock up is a know problem with just about any year car. Then you might consider getting the column lock bypass kit for corvettes of Houston.
Do a search and you will find a lot of posts on this very problem. Do some calling to see if they are doing the recall on your car.
Thank you very much for the information. I have contacted GM, and they should take the bill on this. Thanks again for the information, I feel better about it now :)
