Default 3.73 or 4.10 gears?

Got a 99 6 speed (3.42 gear) and thinking about changing gears.
What's everyone's recommendation. Go with the 3.73 or 4.10 gears?
Just want to be quicker off the line but no drag racing. I still drive quite a bit on the highway but it seems that 6th gear is useless now until about 80 mph.
Is there a big difference between the 3.73 and 4.10 gears?

With your M6 tranny here are the ratios in 1-6th gear. As you can tell not a huge difference from the 3.42-3.73, but a nice jump to the 4.10's but not overkill by any means.

3.42
9.10, 6.09, 4.45, 3.42, 2.53, 1.71

3.73
9.92, 6.64, 4.85, 3.73, 2.76, 1.87

3.90
10.37, 6.94, 5.07, 3.90, 2.89, 1.95

4.10
10.90, 7.30, 5.33, 4.10, 3.03, 2.05

Go for the 4.10's and dont look back. My brother has a M6 and just installed the 3.90's (against my advice) now he said hmmmm the 3.90's are cool I should have gone with the 4.10's!!!!!

I agree, go with the 4.10's. But only if you don't plan on superchargering or other mods that bring you above the 475 rwhp level.

As an alterantive, consider the MN12 transmission. Much quicker off the line (IMHO).

Also, should you get into a S/C, HC, etc. mod, you'll not be 'threating' the rear end (again, IMHO).

If you study those ratios from the above post - the 6 gear with 4.10's is above the half way point between your 5th and 6th gear now.

So just think of 6th being slightly less than half way back to driving in 5th now. No big think as you state that you almost never use 6th now anyway.

3.73's are a mistake on a MN6, too little difference for the money.

I have an A4 and 3.73's are real nice and my final ratio is like 2.42 more like your 5th now.

If you are going to leave the engine stock, I would go with the 4.10's. If Major HP Mods are in your future the 3.73's or an upgraded 3.42's would be the best for that application.

Thanks to Spinmonster and a few others i threw in 4.10s in my new Z06 and its the best thing that i have done to that car. Its a NO BRAINER! See below one of my recent posts about the 4.10s i just installed on my new 03 Z06 which has bolt ons and is making about 380rwhp.

Also, at 70 miles per hour i am turning about 2100 rpms and at 80 i am turning 2400rpm. No big deal regarding a few hundred more rpms. Do the 4.10s, it the best single bolt on for the Z06 and it puts you right in your powerband. To answer your post expect .2 to .3 reduction in your ets with 4.10s as long as you go through the traps in 4th gear and don't have to shift into 5th.
Here you go:
I'm telling you guys the 4.10s in the Z06 are awesome. Nothing like a 75HP increase seat of the pants feeling increase without touching the motor. Of course HP is not really changed (actually maybe slighly lowered at the rear wheels with 4.10) but let me tell you it performs and feels like you opened up a 75HP hit if N20!
For all those who say 4.10s are too much in our Z06s i SAY NONSENSE! Check em out with someone who has the 4.10s b/f making that final judgment!

An obvious compromise would be 3.90s. This gear with the MN6 results in around 2000 rpm at 80 mph, enough of a difference that the engine doesn't feel as if it's pulling a building around.

ZOGMAN,

With your turbo and massive torque your making your perfect staying with the stock gearing in my honest opinion. If you must upgrade, do the 3.73s like Apeelin C5 has done in his LPE Magnacharged Z but would think you should be all set with the single turbo and stock gearing.

3.73s. If the car is going to remain mild or stock, then 4.10s are ok. But for higher hp IMHO its a waste. I hate knowing that i cant hook the first 2 gears on the street.
