Default Power steering or Water Pump!!!`

Okay guys help on this.

I have a leak from the engine. At first I thought it was my Power steering because of the color "Orange fluid". The leak is on the passanger side of the engine.

Yesterday since I am redoing my wheels I get under the car and see a small puddle since I had the car up on jack stands for a week. I saw the puddle grow a little. I thought there is no way power steering fluid can drip that much in a week without driving it.

As soon as I left the car up more in the air I see a drip and another. I get under the car and my spring is mildy covered with Orange color fluid. MAy I add my radiator fluid is orange as well :banghead: . LEsson have different fluid colors to determine leak.

Anyways my belts squeak as well which I looked under and saw it was somewhat covered in fluid.

I wiped it down dry and I won't be able to drive it for a while since my wheels are off and getting repaired.

This might help when I drive straight slowly like 3 mph I hear a small clunking noise or when I am going in reverse! My Power steering fluid has been filled and still full. Ahhhh!!! Some input would be nice.

Thanks!!

Every LS1 to ever come from the factory has had Orange coolant in it.

Sounds like a waterpump gasket might need to be replaced, or worse, the waterpump might be going. If you have a 97 or 98 year model C5 the gaskets will be made of paper and do fail from time to time. You can use the 99+ style waterpump gaskets on it with no problem.

It should be very easy to tell the difference between power steering fluid and coolant. One will be greasy/oily, and one will be like water.

My vette is a 2000 has 64000 miles. I am leaning towards water pump the orange fluid was not oily at all, actually after I wiped it down it dried pretty well. I will check back this week and see if any more fluid is coming out. I think it maybe a gasket.

Okay any info on how to replace a water pump :jester I will do a search. Cheers!!

Drain the radiator (valve on lower passengers side of the radiator), Remove the drive belts using a 15mm for the tensioner, Disconnect the hoses going to the pump, remove the 6 10mm bolts holding pump, replace gaskets and/or pump, reinstall pump and torque to 11lbft in one pass, then retorque to 22lbft in a second pass. Reinstall hoses, belts, and fill coolant. Run engine and keep filling coolant as the temperature rises.

Here is a pic of the pump and the 6 bolts http://www.c5howto.com/howto/c5/head...ewaterpump.jpg

JMX you are the man  . I get some much knowledge from your site. I will be buying some gaskets this week to see if this fixes the problem.

Hey how is the write going for the cam install only. Been sitting on my cam since you said you were going specifically doing a write-up just for the cam.

Thanks!!

JMX your pic just answered all my questions, I got under the car and that is exactly where my pump leak is coming from. I noticed everything under there was covered in fluid. Now I know for sure my pump was causing the problem.

Do you think it could of been the clunking noise as well?? Thinking about replacing the whole darn thing then. Thanks!!
