I am about to do heads and cam. My heads should be here sometime this week. I ordered a Cloyes Hex-adjust timing gear set with the Reynold chain. The first set I got looked used, it had letters engraved on four links of the chain, and the box it came in was in bad shape. It also had some imperfections on the cam gear. I sent it back because I don't want to put a questionable part in my engine. The new gear/chain set arrived today. Upon opening it I noticed the same problem, letters engraved on the chain, and slight imperfections on the cam gear. The box was in better shape, but I am wondering if they re-sent the same Cloyes set to me repackaged. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture and it has been almost three weeks so I cannot be for certain.
My question is: Is it normal to to have letters engraved on the Reynold chain? These are not machined letters, it looks like someone took a paperclip and scratched letters into it.
I just put a Cloyes Hex-adjust in my car. I don't remember any imperfections on the cam gear - I wouldn't have installed it if there were imperfections. I faintly remember etched script letters on the side of the (some) links....maybe 5 or 6 . Is this what you are referring to? Who did you buy the set from?
The gears in the first set looked slightly used/scratched up, the gears in the new set look good. The two chains look similar though, both sets have about four links of the Reynold chain etched with letters. I take it this is normal from your post. Just wanted to make sure I was not putting second hand parts in, as I don't want to have any problems.
I would call them and ask about it. It could be like that little piece of paper in your new jeans that says "inspected by #43"
I didn't notice it on mine, but I just gave it to the engine guru's who were very picky about every part they put in the engine. They even made me replace the knock sensors and oil drain plug.
