Default Help! Drivers side mirror out of socket.

Just got into my vette a few min ago to find an unhappy suprise. My drivers side mirror will not stay in place. It rotates on its base about 180 degrees with no resistance. Can anyone help me fix this problem. I need to know how it stays in place, glue, screws, etc. I would like to get this fixed before Sunday when I have to go back to work.
Thanks in advance.
Eric

here is info I clipped from an earlier post

I have no first hand knowledge, just what is said in the following post (the I is not me)

Broken mirror fix (swivels all the way around)

There is a great fix. It only costs $60 which includes the shipping for it to come back. His name is Ed Swaneck. I sent my mirror and it was returned better than new. He said you can still turn it. But, he is a stand up guy, he contacted me through the whole process. He even insures it for $400 on the way back and it comes back nice and polished. The fix is actually better than factory. He is a machinist by trade. You do have to pull the door panel off to get to the wiring, but it is very easy. I'm no mechanic, but did it myself. Ed will walk you through it on the phone if needed. He faxed the directions right over to me.

Thanks for the info.
I am 2 weeks away from moving out of state (to Hawaii) so I really do not have much time to remove the mirror and ship it out
Anyone know of a quick temp. fix for now so I can drive the car without the mirror flopping around? If I can get it stationary for a few months then I should be able to to the real fix done later.
Thanks again.

Quick fix - duct tape
Quick fix that looks a little better - clear packing tape

ok both of my miros had the same virus i fixed them my self for good
you will need lacing wire sell at auto zone or home depot also a pair of vicegrips long needles. ok he we go

TAKE THE MIRROR OFF IT JUST POP OUT, NO THE WHOLE MIRROR JUST THE GLASS PART.

THEN TAKE THE TO CABLES OF THE MIRROR THOSE CABLES ARE DEFROST CONECTORS

THEN LOOSE THE 3 HEX SCREWS FROM THE MOTOR, DO NOT TAKE THE MOTOR APART

NOW YOU HAVE SOME ROOM TO PLAY WITH. YOU WILL SEE A RETAINER NUT LOOKS LIKE A WASHER THAT YOU HAVE TO FLAT IT OUT A BIT

THEN TAKE THE SPRING AND COMPRESS IT WITH THE VICEGRIPS UNTIL IS COMPLETE COMPRESS

NOW LEAVE IT LIKE THAT FOR NOW

TAKE THE LACING WIRE AND TIE THE SPRING IN 2 SECTIONS SO IT WONT EXPAND NICE AND TIGHT MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE TIES TO BE SEEN SO YOU CAN CUT THEM LATER

NOW TAKE THE VICEGRIPS AND EASE THE TENSION UNTIL YOU REALEASE THE SPRING

NOW THE LACING WIRE WILL STOP THE SPRING FROM EXPAND

PUT THE SPRING BACK IN PLACE AND TAKE THE RETAINER NUT AND PLACE BACK ON TOP OF THE SPRING AND CLIP IT BACK IN PLACE

YOU CAN USE A CLOSE END WRENCH OF 7/8 TO TAP ON THE RETAINER TO PUT THE CLIP BACK ON

ONCE THE CLIP IS ON TRY TO TURN IT A BIT SO LOCKS IN PLACE WITH THE NUTCHES

THEN AFTER THIS IS DONE YOU CAN CUT THE LACING WIRE AND REMOVE IN PIECES FROM THE SPRING ONCE ALL WIRE IS CUT THE SPRING WILL EXPAND PUTING PRESSURE ON THE RETAINER NUT

YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO JUST MAKE SURE THAT RETAINER IS CLIPPED GOOD BEFORE YOU CUT THE WIRE THEN PUT THE MIRROR BACK TOGUETER.

i did both of mirrors the same way and i have no more problems. the reason i think this mirros pop is cuase of the pressure of the spring with the heat the spring expand and pop the retainer out of place or gm dont clip them hard enough.. good luck :flag

It would be nice if someone with good tech writing skills could rewrite this for us. Sounds like you might have some great advice, but it is extremely hard to read.

I have also had the same problem my self. Both mirrors have broken on my car, I had the dealer fix the first one (new mirror + paint) ($250+) then I fixed the second one my self. I got a power-point file from another forum member and it works great. I can e-mail it to you if you want to take a look at it.

Aaron's-coupe,
If you could please send me the file that would be great
I am using double sided body molding tape at the moment and it looks like it may hold until the move, but if there is a better method out their I would love to see it.
Thanks
