You clean K&N Filters when they get dirty, and by that I mean instead of a blue-ish color the filter will look black or gray. You should also notice that a bright light doesn't shine through the material part of the filter. Miles isn't what decides when a K&N needs to be cleaned, but rather the service its in and the dust and other debris it filters out of the air. Hopes this helps.
