I recently purchased a 99 coupe and in the glove box is a keyed switch to turn off the passenger side air bag. My understanding is that Chev did not offer this until '00. I am thinking that it is an after market item, as the ignition key will not fit. My question is does any one know of a company that makes these switches, there is no name on the box. I would like to remove it or at least get a key, the location of the original key is unknown.
The next question is does the ECM control the odometer or is it controlled by the instrument cluster computer.
One could order a GM kit (like from Fitchner) to retrofit a 99 to have the pass. air bag turn off. Could be a GM kit that no one matched the vehicle key to. Perhaps just replacing the key lock is inexpensive?
The VSS "vehicle speed sensor" is located right on top of the transmission with a conector of 2 wires color yellow and purple, the VSS send 4,000 pulses per mile to the PCM then PCM convert it in language for the IPC so you can read it thru the display, also the milage is store in the IPC and yes you airbag switch is after market thing just follow the wires and disconected or any other alterations that are ovious.
What is IPC? I was thinkin about buying export gauge set...if i just trade clusters, will odometer display automatically show my cars true mileage or will it show the 0 miles on new cluster? If it shows 0 miles, what can i do to get mileage correct?
I pulled the glove box apart last night and found the name of the company that made the switch "Aribag Switch Co." and found thier web site. Thanks for the help on both items.
